Life in progress

Jul 23, 2008 14:57

I am reposting this because I re-edited it and got rid of the stupid ellipses. Again, everything in this poem is true. It has nothing to do with bragging about my life - read the last part and you'll understand. This is a sincere poem written about how I feel. I began writing it years ago. I am no poet - always hated poetry - but this is something I felt I had to get off my chest.

Untitled
I have traveled all over the world.
10 countries to be exact.
Done the road trip thing and
visited all the contiguous 48 states.
I’ve stood atop the Eiffel tower,
And gazed down at the arc d’triomphe.
Then walked next to the Moulin Rouge.
Glanced upon Cleopatra’s mummy
And the Rosetta stone.
Fought a bull in Spain
While studying aboard.
Walked down the boulevard of broken dreams.
Been in four states at once.
Been immeasurably homesick.
And sick of home.
Eaten ribs in Memphis.
Lady liberty I’ve touched.
Swam in the Colorado River at the bottom of the Grand Canyon.
Sat on Forrest Gump’s Bench.
Partied on Bourbon Street.
Gambled in Vegas.
Remembered the Alamo.
Gotten lost in the Carlsbad Caverns.
Had a real live roadrunner cross my car.
Been almost abducted in Roswell.
Walked among the ruins at Mesa Verde.
Been in awe at the majesty of Bryce Canyon.
Enjoyed sky country Montana.
Nervously drove next to Mt. St. Helens while smoking.
Drank Starbucks in Seattle.
Stood atop the Space Needle.
Driven across the Golden Gate Bridge.
Seen the Hollywood Sign with my own two eyes.
Ambled on the walk of fame.
Checked out of the Hotel California but never left.
Stood on the Santa Monica Pier.
Broke down outside of the meteor crater in Arizona.
Also in Oklahoma and Wisconsin.
Touched the red rocks of Sedona.
Eaten peaches in Georgia.
Been walking in Memphis.
Saw the ghost of Elvis at Graceland.
Bought liquor at a drive thru liquor store.
Came across a herd of buffalo.
Crossed the Mississippi in a Riverboat.
Been up the St. Louis Gateway Arch.
Rode a roller coaster inside the Mall of America.
Climbed the Sears Tower.
Eaten deep-dish pizza in Chicago (Shy-town).
Watched the falls of Niagara in both winter and summer and both in Canada and the USA.
I’ve seen unbelievable sunsets… and sunrises.
Been to most Planet Hollywoods.
Partied with rock stars.
Overcome all odds.
Been skydiving twice.
About to go a third.
White water rafted on class 5 rapids.
I’ve felt insignificant in the Grand Canyon.
Won beauty contests.
Sung in front of 20,000.
Even sung on tv.
Stood in the Coliseum.
And at ground zero, both before and after 9/11.
Straddled the Greenwich meantime line.
Had my 15 minutes of fame.
Been humbled by a concentration camp.
Stood in the ruins of the second World War.
Measured time at Stonehenge.
Drank port wine in Portugal.
Been to mass at Westminister Abbey.
Hugged a palm tree.
And a hoodoo.
Stared at Shakespeare’s globe.
Gazed at the Sistine Chapel.
Walked among the entombed in the Vatican.
Stolen a piece of the Berlin Wall.
Climbed the German Alps.
Gazed inside castles in Spain, France, England and Germany.
Taught myself Russian.
Studied Hebrew, Italian, German and Spanish.
Jet skied the Caribbean.
And at Lake Mead.
Helicoptered over the Grand Canyon.
Hiked to the bottom of Bryce and the top of Zion.
Bought tequila in Mexico.
Parasailed twice.
I’ve reinvented myself.
Gotten over my stage fright.
Put myself on the line.
Lived through a miracle.
Graduated high school.
College.
Grad school.
Had my beliefs challenged.
Crossed Hoover Dam safely.
Got my kicks on route 66.
Been to the nation's capital.
I took the greatest risk one person can ever take and had it turn out as awful as it could have.
I’ve gained and lost friends.
Said goodbye to friends as they grew up and moved on.
Taken care of a new life.
Failed miserably at a job.
Had multiple foreign exchange students.
I’ve seen the beauty in ugly things.
Gained and lost an uncountable amount of weight.
Been to the start of the Boston Marathon - 17 times.
Held and eaten an alligator.
Met many celebs.
Donated to charity.
Bought my first car.
Had my first real job.
Worked on a movie set.
Written three screenplays.
Been through blizzards, nor’easters, hurricanes, tornados and earthquakes.
I’ve splashed around in the Caribbean, the gulf of Mexico, the Mediterranean, the Atlantic and the Pacific.
I’ve been 7 miles in the air.
And snuba dived around a sunken German war ship.
I’ve been the life of the party - as well as the outcast.
Taken up new hobbies like kayaking.
Been to American Idol tryouts.
Gazed at Mars’ icecaps.
Seen a solar eclipse.
Been prom princess.
Broken bones.
Had mono for four years.
Pneumonia twice.
Witnessed the Red Sox winning a world series twice.
And the Celts winning the championship.
Let’s not forget the Patriots.
Been part of a riot.
Sang in a recording studio.
Molded young minds.
Read hundreds of books.
Taught myself guitar and harmonica.
Been in love.
Been heartbroken.

I don’t need you to complete me.
But it would be nice.
Because I have still not done the one thing I would give all of that up for:
I have still not met you.
