So I'm reading '100 people who are Screwing up America' and the book has fantastic points about our society and where its going and it has some pretty bad things to say about liberals, and thats fine because lefties have been attacking righties, and vice versa for ages and I'm considering converting to Republicanism because I believe the author ( Read more... )

Cinnamon Whaley: Lets see, is Melissa for shutting down abortion clinics? No. Against Stem Cell research? No. Are you for drilling in Alaska? I don't think so. Do you believev we should be spending more on the war? I don't think so. I'm not sure how you feel about the death penalty. I'd think you'd not be for spending billions to keep pot dealers in jail. How about mandatory prayers in school? How about school in general? Lots of education cuts in the last bunch of years. Actually, tell me a Republican trait you DO have, cause I can't think of any.....

umasenvy: You're right except one thing. Those are our presidents ideals. The one diehard republican I do know isnt against abortions or stem cell research, etc. I think that the particular republicans that are in office may feel that way, but thats a liberal generalization that all republicans think the same way on all issues. I think the waters are so muddy right now that no one really knows whats democrat and whats republican anymore because its all gotten way too personal.

Cinnamon Whaley: I completely agree with your last statement, but it's not the president, it's the party in general that are against those things. The president isn't the only one that makes things happen, the senate and the house need to as well, and none of them are willing to pass stem cell research and they're currently controled by the R's. Yes, it's not cut and dry, but you will find a lot more Rs that are against abortion than for it.

umasenvy: I still think its a generalization though. The president may need support but I dont think all Republicans feel that way.

Cinnamon Whaley: No, but not all liberals are for abortion, either.

umasenvy: You're right.

Cinnamon Whaley: Nothing is 100% one way or the other, but the parties exist becuase GENERALLY, they feel different ways on issues, abortion being one of them.

umasenvy: But I've got two very political people that I am basing my thoughts on. One is C* who is an idiot liberal who doesnt believe in abortion or death penalty and one republican who is very intellegent and open minded.
umasenvy: Thats not why she is an idiot, not that I need to point that out. I just want to say that she isnt an idiot just because she disagrees with me.

Cinnamon Whaley: You can't base your alignment off those two people though, that's just as silly as C*.

umasenvy: I know. Im basically just saying that I used to be the same liberal idiot that the book is talking about and now I am trying to be as open minded as I claim to be.

Well, being opened minded just means listening to all sides of an argument, and then making your own decisions about that issue. Shutting out one or more sides of an argument because of a stereotype of preconception about what that means, or moving away from one side because of those same reasons is the main problem I see in politics today. There aren't enough people on either side that are willing to listen first and then come to their conclusions.
