I really adore it almost beyond words when fandom makes me love something. Watching Pacific Rim did not make me love it. Tumblr did. I'm not fannish about it, exactly, but I've hit "reflexive squee" status at a lot of elements. (As my
Pacific Rim tag on Tumblr clearly attests.)
Here is
an example of how Tumblr fandom is making me love it.
Also, look!
chaila made a
Pacific Rim vid to "Sound the Bells", one of my favorite songs from Dessa's new album.
And over on Tumblr,
the first annual Jaegercon is being organized:What is Jaegercon?
Jaegercon is a Tumblr Convention, which simply put is a collection of events, competitions, online-meetups and celebrations of a particular fandom or character. We Pacific Rim fans are spread across the world, and so tumblr is the best way to unite!
How do I participate?
Any way you like! Over the weekend of the 9th, 10th and 11th of August you can post anything related to Pacific Rim - fanart, fanfiction, mixes, meta, headcanons, cosplay, photosets, absolutely anything. Participate in events and chats, interact with your fellow fans, and just be a part of it all!
(Toronto folks, apparently there'll be some sort of
organized group excursion to the 6 PM showing at the Scotiabank on August 11, assuming the movie is still playing. We note I will be in town then! I'm Going To the Theatre with
andora that day, as it happens, but that's during the afternoon and the proposed Pacific Rim viewing is not.)
I haven't even listened to Welcome to Night Vale (I will! I swear! I'm just not a podcasts person!), although I do follow them on Twitter and enjoy the hell out of it. But Tumblr is making me love the fandom (which, we note, is not the same as Tumblr making me love the source material and/or the idea of the source material, as with Pacific Rim). It's so much fun! I know NOTHING ABOUT THE STORY, and yet! (I do know
there are transcripts; if I don't get around to actually listening to the whole thing properly, I may simply read through them and listen to a bit of the podcast to get a feel for the voice.)
