Manga reading (or NOT reading) habits and writing-related links

Oh, Amazon. You have no way of knowing how far behind I am on my manga reading, but it's both hilarious and cruel of you to send me an email asking me to review vol. 9 (the final volume) of The Story of Saiunkoku when I haven't even read the first volume yet. *eyes complete series on shelf*

I'm not sure if I feel weirder about the number of manga series I'm faithfully buying as new volumes come out despite not having read them at all (frex, The Story of Saiunkoku, Sailor Moon, Sailor V, A Bride's Story, and Wandering Son) or about the number of series where I bought one or two volumes and then opted not to buy more until I actually read those volumes and see if I like them (frex, Gate 7, GTO: 14 Days in Shonan, Limit, Psyren, and Durarara!!). In most of the latter cases, I think I'm way behind and will have to pay through the nose to catch up, but of course manga tends to be in and out of print runs so much that I always want to buy the volumes while I know they're available...

(Having talked to Gaffney and Jon about it at Anime North, I think I may give up on GTO: 14 Days in Shonan, because I hadn't realized it was such a direct continuation of the original manga series, which I've never read [and which is now out of print]. I've seen the anime, but that was a decade ago. And so.)

People ask me what manga I'm reading lately, and my answer for the last year or so has basically been "Yotsuba&! and usually The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service", both of which, we note, only come out about once a year.
I'm not going to participate in badsexfest, but it amuses me that it exists.

(Last night I spent a few hours hanging out with the girl, and among many, many other topics of conversation I was reminded that one of my favorite sex scenes I've ever written was a] quite short and b] involved one of the participants falling asleep partway through due to emotional and physical exhaustion.)

Meanwhile, the amnesty period for
hc_bingo ended yesterday, so I got in under the wire with the three fics I managed to finish for it. (Three Newsflesh fics, now tidily rounded up in this post.) If the rules allow me to request a card in the next round despite not having managed a bingo or anything, I'll probably opt for one. The whole thing is fun, even if I didn't technically succeed.
