Just one link this time

Today
cleolinda posted What this is all about: her findings and analysis of the current situation with LiveJournal and, for the most part, Facebook. She herself has no current plans to abandon ship (and I've linked to the LJ version of her post, which will likely have more commentary), but partway through the post she notes "I'm not even telling you to flee Livejournal. I'm telling you that, in order to understand what someone will do next, and to decide what you want to do in response, you need to know what their goals are".

At the very beginning of the post she also links to her earlier posts about pingbacks and LJ displaying users' real names once they cross-post to Facebook. The post is fairly long and link-heavy, and well worth reading whether you plan to stick around LJ or not.

I still have no plans to leave LJ entirely, but the less time I have to spend on it to see all the people I'm interested in, the happier I am.

So much of my anger over this is because of how much I loved LJ. I adore DW and am entirely happy to be over there as well, but it's a different experience. As a counterexample, I hate Facebook. I have an account there, but I hate it and have pretty much always hated it. When they screw up (which is pretty much constant), I make faces and question myself for having an account, but it doesn't fill me with rage. OTOH, watching everything go down with LJ is watching something I loved turned into something I think is pretty awful, at least on the admin and code sides. There's still a viable and often strong community on LJ, and while I wish everyone I knew were on DW, I also don't want to be driven entirely out of my long-term online home from sheer disgust. (And yes, my feelings are every bit as conflicted as they probably sound.)

I guess it comes down to, I'm glad I have another shiny online home--and I do!--but I was here before any of the times LJ was sold to increasingly-harmful owners. They own it entirely, but this was our online home before it became their damn social networking site that they're so sure would be making so much more money in perfect peace and harmony if all of us annoying whiners would just shut the hell up.
