With Kagura and Rin, my take on it isn't just that hitting anyone in front of Rin at that point is a bad idea--I think she's got some very, very deep issues with physical violence (which adds an interesting dynamic to her falling in love with Haru, given his issues and reputation), and to me that scene is one of the most obvious indications that her parent(s) abused her physically as well as emotionally. (This is something I've been thinking about lately, since I realized that the Tokyopop version of the doctor talking to Kazuma about her in vol. 14 can be read in way that doesn't necessarily indicate physical harm.)
(The trouble with talking about that scene is that I basically put everything I think about it into a fic once, and sort of run out of anything else to add in normal discussion. It's a little weird.)
I feel so bad for Kagura in this chapter--other than her failure to be responsible about the whole martial arts training--because she's trying so hard to get over it, and she's SO impulsive, and then she has to deal with Rin's sudden freak-out on top of that...
I don't know if it's that Shigure actually gets more manipulative, or that he starts being a bit more open about it. But he's sure being obvious. :/
The words "Yay Hiro's mom!" really can't be repeated often enough. ^^
