Music pimping post (specialized, but with a little more point than usual)

Mar 26, 2008 14:54

First, icon love! Flamika's been making me custom icons recently. *^^* This one's relevant because that line's from "Cooling", on which more later. Since this is a pretty specialized post, consider it a GIP if the rest of the content doesn't appeal to you.

[EDITED APRIL 8: The gist of this post (which is still intact under the cut) was that until March 31 Tori Amos was selling soundboard recordings of some of her 2007 shows, and I uploaded 14 songs from among the five concerts I bought. I can reupload any of these if anyone wants me to, but the original sendspace links in this post have expired now.]

I meant to share a few live Tori songs back around when I released the last Kiss I posted, since the fic was why I bought an "Isabel" concert recording just to get a particular song. But I'm going to post a good handful of songs instead, because the site that's been selling legit soundboard recordings of some of her shows from last year has announced that the concerts will stop being available at the end of the month. So if anyone's a fan of hers and hasn't checked them out, this is my "it's awesome that she made these shows available and the performances are great--see?" post. Each concert costs $10 USD for .mp3 and $15 for .flac. (I, um, bought five. I bought the Pip show I saw in Toronto, and then got the Ft. Meyers Isabel show, and then caved and decided to get one from each Doll...except that Santa's shows included too many songs I love, so I bought two of hers. La!) Anyway, I'll probably talk a little about some of the songs, a lot of which have character associations for me, but the talk is not the point. The point is that the songs are wonderful and you should hear them. She's an amazing live performer. To download, change "xx" to "tt" in the download links. Songs are in .mp3 unless they're from the Toronto show, which I bought in .flac (which means huge files, but they're lossless). Please let me know if any links don't work.

General American Doll Posse tour info: lyrics, music, vocals, Bösendorfer grand piano, rhodes electric piano, and hammond organ--Tori Amos (performing as "Santa", "Pip", "Clyde", "Isabel", and "Tori"); drums and other percussion--Matt Chamberlain; bass--Jon Evans; guitar and various--Dan Phelps. Most lyrics can be found here. Setlists and reviews for all shows can be found here.

First up, "In the Springtime of His Voodoo" (Isabel, Ft. Meyers; originally on Boys For Pele). The corner of my brain that associates music and characters did a truly bizarre thing and decided that this is a Rin and Shigure song (that last Kiss got its title and an epigraph from it). This makes basically no sense to me (it has nothing at all to do with the "mood" of the song, and only connects to maybe six lines in the entire song), so I really don't expect anyone else to get the same association, but it's a neat song, and it sounds cool live.

and right there for a minute
i knew you so well

"Spark" (Tori, Toronto; originally on from the choirgirl hotel). This one's pretty much always been a Rin song for me, but flamika attaching it so firmly to Akito has skewed it to both of them for me. ^_- (The thing that catches my attention in this recording is the way you can hear her voice fade out and back in mid-note before the chorus--because she's pivoting from one of the other keyboards to the Böse. ^^)

6:58 are you sure where my spark is

"Take Me With You" (Tori, solo, Toronto; originally on The Piano: A Collection).

tears turn to steel and the wound never heals
in the darkness of November

"Sugar" (Santa, Dallas; originally a Little Earthquakes b-side). I've talked about this one ad nauseum, but on the off chance anyone doesn't know, this is my very favorite Tori song, and my association with it is the mutually destructive/obsessive side of Haru and Rin's relationship. This is an awesome version. ^^

What they did to you
oh my god, my sweet boy
so sweet, but still just not enough for them

"Cooling" (Tori, Chigago; originally a from the choirgirl hotel b-side). Before I fell in love with "Sugar", this was my Very Favorite Song for years, and I still think it's one of the most beautiful things Tori's written. For years she performed it without the bridge, which was one of my favorite parts, and then she added the bridge back in on this tour. [see also: icon] I've epigraphed the song all over the place at different times (including an X fic, which is unusual--the only reason it seems like I associate Tori songs with everything is because I mostly write Rin, Haru, or Akito. For the most part I don't associate her songs with other characters or fandoms).

and i know i have been driven like the snow
but this is cooling faster then i can

"Suede" (Tori, Ft. Meyers; originally on To Venus and Back). Slightly contradicting the above, this is a Rin-Akito-Shigure song in my head.

and i fear
my fear is greater than my faith
but i walk the missionary way

"Siren" (Tori, Milwaukee; originally on the Great Expectations soundtrack. Music co-written by Patrick Doyle for the film). Love, love, love this one.

and you know you're gonna lie to you in your own way

"Hotel" (Tori, Chicago; originally on from the choirgirl hotel). I'm including this one because I never thought she'd do it live, and it sounds really, really neat, even though she messes up and backs up (which she's always very good about--most of her songs she just nails, but when she screws up she takes it completely in stride. Sometimes she laughs and changes songs or does an improv and sometimes she just picks back up where she left off, but this is a very band-involved song that they hadn't done much [this might be the first time], so she had to talk the guys back to the right place. And it still sounds great).

tell me that he’s missing
tell me this is one for Lollipop Gestapo

choirgirl songs were out in full force on this tour, the first time in years. Here's three from the Dallas show: Santa doing "She's Your Cocaine" and "Raspberry Swirl", and Tori doing "Jackie's Strength" solo.

you sign Prince of Darkness
try Squire of Dimness
*****
I am not your senorita
I don’t aim so high
In my heart, in my heart I did no crime

make me laugh
say you know you can turn
me into the real thing
so I show you some more

"Juarez" (Clyde, Milwaukee; originally on To Venus and Back). Posting this one largely for flamika.

cause the desert likes
young girl’s flesh and
no angel came

"Mountain" (Isabel, Ft. Meyers; originally an online-only Scarlet's Walk b-side).

kiss the pavement that you thought had you protected
she'll be down when the mountain lets her go

And finally, "Cruel" (Pip, Toronto; originally on from the choirgirl hotel). I'm including this one mainly because adding a Pip song seems obvious, but I still think her takes on the songs are interesting as artistic statements rather than being enjoyable to listen to. Other people disagree and have really enjoyed her sets. But anyway, if you know the original version, this is what it sounded like after Pip got hold of it. Some swearing, IIRC.

I can be cruel
I don’t know why

All (or almost all?) of the shows include Bouncing Off Clouds, Big Wheel, Cornflake Girl, and Code Red, and encores usually included Hey Jupiter (the Dakota version), Precious Things, or a sorta fairytale. None of the available concerts included any cover songs.
