Hellsing, mostly

Mar 30, 2004 08:20

Today I have to spend my class time working on a written & oral report, so I'm waking my writing muscles up before I begin.

We saw all of Hellsing over the weekend--almost all in one day, but it was slightly too late to get past episode 12 the day we mainlined it, so we had to come back to the last episode on Sunday. This is the last show of the ( Read more... )

*ahem* Spoilery, spoilery, spoilers. For the TV series, anyway. (in case there's anyone reading who hasn't seen it yet)

I always thought that Alucard's taking off the binds was due to situations falling into a set of previously defined limits (defined by Integra, I'd say). You know, 'vampire type X requires binding Y to be removed' and some-such.

And now, this is where I babble about slightly obscure European History, inorder to answer Ysa's question about whether or not Alucard is actually Dracula.

The TV series made fairly certain that by the end you would know that Alucard is supposed to be Vlad Tepes, also known as Vlad the Impaler or Vlad Dracula (this is the guy the Dracula legend actually sprang out of. Don't research him unless you've got a strong stomach. He was one truly NASTY guy). That shot near the end where Alucard's face was overlaid by the other one with the weird mustache? The mustachioed guy was Vlad Tepes, ganked from the guy's official portrait.

Also, that bit with Incognito and the pole? Very, very, Very Tepes. Take my word for it. It's why he was known as the Impaler. (yes, ewwwwwww)

Of course, this 'making clear' pretty much relies on the random watcher of the show to know who Vlad was and how he links into the Dracula legend, and he's not exactly the best known historical figure. Not as many people want to research about someone known as 'the impaler' rather than someone known as 'the great' or 'the conquerer' or some-such.

I'll take all that as a 'yes'. Thanks, Jelynne. ^^ I knew about the Vlad/Dracula connection, but I'd forgotten about it.

>.> You don't happen to have Hellsing scans, do you? (I don't recall seeing it on your list, so I'm guessing not.)

Hmm, I remember having read some of the scanlated manga... But I don't remember if it's inhabiting my computer. I shall check when I get home.
