Furuba theory (Shigure and the fable)
I was thinking this a while ago, and forgot to post about it: does anyone else think it's possible that Shigure wrote the book that Momiji's classmate takes to school ("A Collection of Funny Stories" [TP trans.], in vol. 3), with the story about the foolish traveler? There's no solid support of this idea in the text, other than the discovery in the volume 9 omake that Shigure uses quite a few pen names and writes more than just his 'literary' books and his trashy romances.
I don't think this is proof or anything, but the idea occurred to me when Momiji began telling the story to Akito. Obviously, it's basically his way of explaining Tohru to Akito, and of giving her a chance to grow along the same lines as the main cast already have; it's a gorgeous way of bringing things together. But Shigure's so multi-faceted that it wouldn't surprise me if it was really his story originally, and there'd be something lovely about it being his story that finally makes that connection for Akito.
Yes, I am cheerfully inventing my own fanon. But do you guys think it works?

Speaking of Momiji, in the chapter 8 discussion on RandomFandom, something struck me about his mother and Hatori's memory trick: when Hatori suppresses Kana's memories, doesn't he later say that he avoids spending a lot of time with her so that the memories aren't triggered? And yet Momiji's mother doesn't respond with anything beyond "don't be silly" (I totally forget her actual words) when Momo suggests that Momiji looks like them (and wears German clothes, and has a German accent . . . ). I guess I'm wondering how much of that failure to remember anything has to do with the original suppression, and whether the effect is stronger if it's something the subject really *wants* . . ?
. . . and my brain just decided it might be interesting to fic about Momiji's mother. *_* Um, what?
