I'm considering trying a 28-hour day.
My sleep schedule is all messed up anyhow, and grad school is about the most flexible work you can get. The semester ends on Friday, and as long as I get my work done throughout the summer, I doubt anyone cares at what time of day it gets done. Obviously, I'd let Martin know what I'm doing. I have access to the lab at any time. It would be excellent to get a 20-h day, easily allowing for 14 hours of work a day, which is 10 hours more than I usually get in an average workweek. Also, at the end of a 20-hour day, I'm certain to be exhausted, therefore improving my sleep, because I'd actually sleep 8 hours straight through.
Potential problems are that usual social interaction is sure to get screwed up when you're on a different schedule than everyone else. However, there's enough awake time that corresponds with light (especially during the weekend) that I doubt my friendships would suffer. As for Brian, I guess I'd have to clear it with him first, but he's getting annoyed with my insomnia anyway. We'd probably both get better sleep, and still have enough overlapping time to spend together.
I'm not sure how hard switching back to a normal schedule would be. I would have to be on a regular schedule in fall in order to attend classes.
Still, a very intriguing idea. Think I'll discuss it with Brian when I get home tonight.
