Recently, I have noticed a decrease in the quality of Brian's Netflix movies that he's renting. Upon inquiry, he admitted that this was because he had seen all the movies he really wanted to see and was now just adding to his queue whatever Netflix suggested he might like. The straw for this camel's back was "Crank" (I beg you, do NOT see it). This catastrophe led to a good idea, however. We have now begun the endeavour of watching all 100 of the best movies of all time, according to the American Film Institute. While this is certainly not a new idea, it does make excellent use of our Netflix subscription, and guartantees at least a night or two of quality time and culture each week.
We've invented some rules.
1) We will watch every movie all the way through (I learned my lesson on this the first time I saw "It's a Wonderful Life")
2) We will watch the movies in reverse order, that is from worst (#100:Ben-Hur) to best (#1:Citizen Kane)
3) The only exemptions are the 21 movies we have BOTH already seen (I've seen 48, so I'll be seeing a lot of repeats)
Tonight's our opening film: #31 "The Maltese Falcon" (we're starting there because it was already in the mail when we set up our list)
I will keep you abreast of our progress and let you know if I strongly recommend (or don't) that you see something that I think most people probably haven't seen.
