My take on last night's AI show:
Lee DeWyze - "Fireflies" by Owl City - This was a curious song choice by Lee. Of course, he was doing his whole rock treatment of the song, but I'm not sure if it completely worked. I was a bit bored by the song. The vocals were okay. It was a bit of a meh performance, but I think Lee carved his niche of being the "rocker" this season.
Alex Lambert - "Trouble" by Ray LaMontagne - Alex has finally settled into his groove and chosen the blue-eyed soul path to travel. His vocals on this song were really good and on-point and fit in with the song well. The major problem Alex has, is that he looks so uncomfortable performing, that it takes away from the song a bit. I anticipate he will get better by leaps and bound the further along in the competition he goes.
Tim Urban - "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen - Tim Urban realizes that his vocal range is very limited, so he does this song which doesn't require any vocal heavy lifting. He's also playing guitar, as well, which raises more interest from the audience. His vocals really are not up to par with the rest of the competitors. I would like to say he will be eliminated, but you never know, with the tweens texting their votes.
Andrew Garcia - "Genie In a Bottle" by Christina Aguilera - The past couple of weeks Andrew had problems covering songs by men, so he went back to the well from his "Straight Up" days, and sings a Christina song. It was a definite improvement over the past couple of weeks for sure, but one has to wonder if Andrew is a one-trick pony at this point.
Casey James - "You'll Think of Me" by Keith Urban - Casey makes a go of country this week. I must ask if this song is popular...I mean he did okay with it, but it wasn't really a very interesting song. That being said he did a solid job on it, but he's going to have to figure out what type of artist he wants to sell himself as, because he's showing too many different styles and genres in this competition so far.
Aaron Kelly - "I'm Already There" by Lonestar - Aaron does his country-pop performance again, which I think is pretty smart of him. There is no doubt that he is a good singer, but I think this song is a little mature and grand for his vocal ability at this point. He did a pretty decent job, but the song choice was a little too ambitious, and worked against him a little.
Toddrick Hall - "Somebody to Love" by Queen - Todrick finally got the memo, and didn't rearrange a song so that the listener couldn't recognize it anymore! That being said, the song started out a little rough, but Todrick finally got it together enough to finish the song well. The problem is, I think it's too little too late for him in this competition.
Michael Lynche - "This Woman's Work" by Maxwell - Oh my goodness. Perfect song choice for Michael tonight. He was so vocally on-point and in control the entire time. It was a very authoratative performance, and it showcased the type of artist that Michael is going to be. It was the best performance, possibly, of the season so far.
