#character :: basics#character :: historyinitial.backstory.lies
    Naoto's story starts when she's young, in flash backs that she can't quite remember. What she does remember is her parents (but not their names or their faces) and her running (but not from who or what), only to eventually be confronted by an assassin in the darkness. She doesn't know why, but they are attacked, and the assassin's mysterious sword leaves both Naoto's parents dead (and in pieces) and an x-shaped scar on her chest from the attack. She only survives because of her parents shielding her from the sword's attack, but she is still severely injured and as a result of the trauma loses her memory (of her life before the attack, her parents, and her own name). As she is dying, she is found by a man with a blade the same as the one that killed her parents.

    Naoto is taken in by Fuyumine (although she does not ever find out his name until after he is dead) and raised and trained in combat. They share a love-hate relationship, with Naoto believing him to be the killer of her parents and Fuyumine never bothering to confirm nor deny her silent accusation. Fuyumine is also the one who gives Naoto her name, as she cannot remember her real name or the faces of her parents. Due to the trauma of her parents being slaughtered and her near death experience, Naoto suffers from amnesia (specifically, retrograde amnesia), unable to recall any type of past before the incident.

    Other than Fuyumine, she also meets Magato, a student of Fuyumine's. Fuyumine and Naoto's relationship remains static over the years until Magato attempts some cute bullshit (see his section of this app for more information), leaving Naoto a chance to see a different side of Fuyumine that changes her opinion of him somewhat. Unfortunately, Naoto comes home one day to find Fuyumine murdered and Magato there taking credit and praising his deed. Enraged, Naoto challenges him and the two battle, with Naoto emerging as the victor. Magato, seriously wounded, leaves Naoto with information concerning the real killer of her parents-another "Naoto" with the same sword as Fuyumine's-and where she can find them-the Underground.

    This information takes Naoto on a search that ultimately leads her to meeting with the other main DOGs cast members.

chance.meetings.half-truths&whitelies
    Naoto first crosses paths with Heine and Badou, although it's a brief incident of them passing by one another. Naoto doesn't even acknowledge them, her focus solely on the mission ahead of her. Her destination eventually is meeting with a group of street dealers in the Underground, seeking information. It doesn't take long for Naoto to feel as if she's being cheated as the gang starts to enclose around her during talks. Unintimidated by their advances, Naoto's calm demeanor remains in place. A fight ensues and Naoto emerges victorious. After their defeat, the leader gives her all the information he knows, which isn't much. He does, however, mention a rumor of a young man looking for similar information. With new information in hand, Naoto goes searching for the described "team" (Heine and Badou) and eventually arrives at Bishop's church.

    She meets Nill and Bishop, and after a brief talk with Bishop, things are once again thrown into chaos. The Carselino Family attacks the church with the intent to kidnap or otherwise harm Nill. Without hesitation-despite it not being her battle-Naoto rushes to defend both the church and its occupiers. After the battle, Naoto becomes concerned about why they only seemed to have been after Nill. From here on out, Naoto's behaviour towards the girl is particularly kind and soft all the while being fiercely protective of her when necessary (in a similar manner that Heine does). It doesn't take long for Naoto to not only treat her differently than she does others but to treat her as a younger sibling as well. It's not long after this that she meets the team described by the dealer consisting of Badou and Heine.

blade.maiden.truths
    Although Naoto's search brings her to meet Heine & co., things only get rapidly more complicated in her quest for the truth. Believing Heine's connection to the Underground will assist her in finding this other "Naoto", she spends a good deal of time stalking following him around. In the end, her assumptions are at least partially right: she does manage to find the one she's looking for.

    Along with that, however, comes no answers and even more questions. After the Underground forces make a raid on the city and more is revealed about Heine's past, Magato Fuyumine makes an appearance. Not having seen him since Fuyumine's death (and wounded, at that), Naoto is shocked and confused by his resurfacing. After a small physical and verbal squabble (including both Heine and Magato both asking if the other is her boyfriend, morons), Magato suggests the two of them relocate to continue their "reunion". Heine tags along and following Magato leads to the three of them (unintentionally) coming face to face with Campnella Frühling (they do take a brief stop at the sight Naoto remembers being attacked at prior, but Magato hurries them along). Magato calls her "Naoto-nee-sama" rather affectionately and Naoto realizes that she is indeed the same person from that fateful day where she was almost killed. Letting her rage get the best of her (something she does not normally do and even Heine makes mental note of it), she confronts Frühling (and... basically gets her ass handed to her).
    "You almost killed me back then, taking everything from me... And just as I thought I might be able to keep living without getting back my past, you decide to show up and ruin everything..."
    Naoto; DOGS: B&C, Chapter 62, Page 9

    While Naoto claims Frühling is the person who "stole everything", she finds out that not much was stolen from her after all. Frühling reveals that all her assumptions of that fateful day are incorrect. As it turns out, Naoto is Frühling's "double" (which I can only assume means she is a clone that was created in case something happened to Frühling. However, what she means by "double" is still currently unclear in the manga and not explicitly stated). The parents that protected Naoto from that blade? Researchers of the Underground turned traitor attempting to escape with a child Naoto and failed. Just as Frühling turns to leave (the entire situation is interrupted by the city's Special Mobile Ground Defense Force), Naoto attempts to follow only to have Magato hold her back:
    "Let it go, Naoto. ...While I'm all excited at the prospect of seeing you go all out, the way you are now, you stand no chance against her. Not yet. So save it for another time."
    Magato; DOGS: B&C, Chapter 62, Page 18

    The incident leaves Naoto shell-shocked, confused and now truly no longer having a sense of who she is. However, when questioned later about her own earlier words by Heine, she is able to answer him in a personality-defining way without despair in her words.
    "You said you have them now, didn't you? 'Things to Protect'."
    "Indeed... Yes, I do, now."
    Heine & Naoto; DOGS: B&C, Chapter 63, Page 20

    #character :: personality Naoto's initial reaction towards others is to be rather cold and aloof, although she isn't necessarily rude (unless, of course, others are rude to her, such as in Heine's case). She rarely shows her emotions, whether socially or on the battlefield, even in shock or anger (although there are exceptions to this, such as her meeting with Campnella Frühling). Her guarded behaviour may be a trust issue (it could be said she has a hard time getting close to people), but it's probably more of a reflection of her priorities due to her past (her desire for revenge and to seek out the truth) and a result of her mentor as her personality is somewhat similar of Fuyumine's that he displayed towards her during their time together.

    While Naoto is distant, she is not unfeeling. In fact, she is quite the opposite. Underneath her exterior is a kind person, and it's easy to see that in her interactions with Nill, whom she shows kindness and gentleness towards, treating like a younger sister and quickly becoming protective of. Even on the battlefield, while on target, Naoto is not brutal. She has no qualms about fighting, and she has no issue with using her weapon, but it's clear she's more of a defender than an attacker. So far, she hasn't killed anyone in combat (save trying to kill the soldiers from the Underground defending Nill and others). She was the one to tell Heine to "quit it" in their battle with Luki and Noki when he got overbearing before she realized exactly what they were dealing with.

    Her demeanor is also a result of her desire to not worry others. She puts on a fearless, strong and independent face, even in times when she doesn't feel any of those emotions. She doesn't want to worry those she cares about and her role as a defender makes it very hard for Naoto to accept help from others. She is the protector and there is no time nor place for her to need to be protected, whether physically or mentally.
    "...Besides, I don't want to make Nill worried."
    Naoto; DOGS: B&C, Chapter 64, Page 7
    During battles, Naoto's greatest ally is her ability to remain calm and collected despite her emotions, allowing her to use them to her advantage rather than hinder her. However, even Naoto is subject to her emotions and there are times when her stoic mask isn't enough and she is overwhelmed by her feelings. (eg. It's not hard to see she is upset when Fuyumine dies and she makes no attempt to hide it and when she catches a glimpse of the person who killed her "parents", she is sent into a fit before passing out.)

    So, all in all, she may come off as not the most friendly person at first, but she's really a good person once you can get to know her. She'll trust some more easily than others, and a lot of her trust and ability to like someone does tune in with her ability to respect them and their actions.

    personality sub-category :: RELATIONSHIPS
      Naoto's personality is very well expressed throughout the manga via her interaction with other individuals in canon. This section was included to further expand on how she can (and does) act towards certain people, but can be discarded if the moderators feel it unnecessary.

      || FUYUMINE: Fuyumine is the father figure/guardian-type figure to Naoto, although it's only in retrospect that he really takes on this role as most of her time spent with him is her hating him thinking he is the killer of her parents. Despite her obvious hatred and opinion of him, Fuyumine trains her in the way of the sword and in defense, also giving her the name Naoto (although he never once calls her by this name). He also never hints to her that he isn't her parents' killer, letting her thrive on her hatred and use it as her means of getting through each day. Their relationship remains unchanged through the years until Fuyumine prevents Magato from harming (read: raping) Naoto. At that point, Naoto catches a glimpse of a different side of Fuyumine through a mirror and their relationship changes a little from that point on. The next time we see Naoto with Fuyumine, however, is when she comes home to find him dead and Magato nearby. After a battle with Magato, Naoto stays with Fuyumine's body, showing a rare moment where she cries, confused and unsure after finding out that he wasn't the killer after all and showing she did care about him in the end. After his death, at the very least, she respects him and looks to him for guidance even in his absence (In chapter 20, she calls out to the deceased Fuyumine in her confusion, looking for answers and even calls him "Father" at the end, giving a bit more of reflection on their relationship). In DOGs: Bullets and Carnage, Naoto adds "Fuyumine" to her name as an acknowledgment to Fuyumine as her mentor when she finally finds out his name from Granny Liza. For more information, go here.

      || CAMPNELLA FRÜHLING: The "other Naoto". Blind rage is just about the only word that can describe the majority of her feelings. Normally calm and collected even in the heat of battle, Naoto lets her emotions get the best of her the first time she finally confronts Frühling. While their relationship has yet to be explored, the two are definitely intertwined within one another's lives whether they like it or not, especially with Frühling calling Naoto her "spare" and "double" in a quick conversation before they part ways. More information is here

      || MAGATO FUYUMINE: Because we all need that crazy fucker in our lives. WHAT. HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN THIS WEIRD RELATIONSHIP. SCRE Fuyumine's killer, once a student of his. Naoto's relationship with Magato is about as complicated as he is (which is about as complicated as as many screws as he has loose, my god ;; ). Naoto meets Magato not long after she's taken in by Fuyumine. He seems to take quite an interest in Naoto over the years, even at one point going as far as rape harassing the hell out of her in Fuyumine's absence, only to be stopped by his return. Later on, he kills Fuyumine and Naoto comes home to the scene. Enraged, she engages a battle with Magato that she eventually emerges victor as, surprisingly enough to Magato. She severely wounds him, and before he leaves Magato gives her important information about her parents' death, revealing that Fuyumine wasn't the murderer and who and where she can find the real murderer. He also tells her Fuyumine's sword is for her. Despite her rage towards Magato and her inability to forgive him (right before she defeats him in the battle, he seems to have won and offers for them to stop fighting and "make up" and she refuses), she seems worried about where he will go (which is interesting since she definitely tells him she hates him). He makes it seem like he goes off to die, but recent chapters show he's not dead at all. LOOOL :) He's also currently seeming to take a more "older brother" stance towards Naoto than he did back when she was younger. But, he still pulls a blade on her when they remeet. So, yeah, maybe not all that much has changed. More information about their relationship is here

      || HEINE RAMMSTEINER: While these two certainly are far from being considered "friends" (and with attitudes like theirs, it might be a very LONG time before they inch there way to that point), Heine and Naoto can be considered acquaintances. Despite the tension between the two, they are quite impressive together against their enemies. Their common bonding ground is that of what seems to be having the same enemy. However, Naoto does not approve of Heine's brutal fighting tactics, and the two often are seen glaring or otherwise having a tense air about them. Nevertheless, Heine is someone Naoto considers an ally and someone she will defend if necessary (and maybe even someone she could possibly trust). While Naoto and Heine seem to have different goals (one looking for their past, the other trying to get away from theirs), it's hinted that the truth of what they ultimately seek may not be so different. In recent chapters, Naoto and Heine, while still bickering and not on a friend level, seem to silently start understanding one another. (They both give each other their version of a "pep talk"... which is kind of fail for characters like them. But it's the effort that counts?!) For more detailed information, see here

      || NILL: Nill is one of the few people that Naoto treats kindly and sweetly, showing a softer side to her personality. Nill seems to have this effect on many people, and is like a younger sister of sorts to the entire DOGs cast, but Naoto has taken it upon herself to protect Nill in a similar fashion that Heine does. Part of her protective nature of Nill may come from the fact that despite Nill's dark past, she's somehow managed to maintain a childlike innocence that Naoto lost long before she can even remember. Either way, the two of them grow close during their time together and while seeking her identity is still her driving force, Nill becomes an irreplaceable part of Naoto's life.

      || BADOU NAILS: She's not very familiar with Badou other than having fought alongside him, but Naoto does seem to at least respect Badou more than his white-haired partner. ...She's also well aware of his "smoking problem" and while they don't necessarily seem to hold a strong opinion one way or another about each other, Naoto seems at least comfortable enough to playfully swat at him when he insults her for not being able to sew and being a "muscle-bound tranny" 8,). More information can be found here.
    #character :: extra detailsMode of Entrance: Portal
    Suitability:
      Naoto is an adapter. Her upbringing has taught her to be independent and, while have ruthless devotion in searching for her goal, able to integrate into situations that present themselves to her. It doesn't matter whether it's positive or negative, Naoto sees that every step she takes is molded into the direction of following her goal, always working to bring herself one step closer. Mysterium may be the biggest detour from her intentions she's so far experienced, but her determination to see those ambitions fulfilled will fuel her to be pro-active and take on just about anything necessary for her to get back, no matter how long it takes.
    Items:
      ⇒ her (Fuyumine's) katana
      ⇒ bag (for storing/carrying the katana)
      ⇒ switchblade
    Abilities/Powers:
      Powers :: n/a
      Skill :: swordsmanship
        Acute mastery of the katana and switchblade she carries. She is a very capable fighter, although in recent chapters we see that despite this, she is apparently still far from her true potential.
      Skills :: expanded (strengths, weaknesses)
        Naoto's combat method consists of blades, particularly the katana inherited from Fuyumine, but she also continues to use the switchblade that he gave to her when she was younger as well. Having trained since she was taken under Fuyumine's wing, her combat skills are impressive and her mastery with blades is not to be taken lightly despite her appearance.
        She is quick and agile, and her combat style with her blade is fluid and graceful. This gives her an advantage over her enemies where she has otherwise glaringly obvious weaknesses.

        Naoto's mental strengths lie in her ability to remain calm and collected, especially during a battle. Her ability to think quickly and clearly in stressful situations and react to a situation almost instantaneously without hesitation is one her greater assets.

        In turn, Naoto's mental weakness is when she loses control of her emotions. (Honing them and using them as her focus, as she does in her battle with Magato during 'Blade Maiden', for example, is a representation of using her emotions to her advantage. Seeing the person she recognizes as (what she thought were) her parents' killer in a later scene and, as a result, screaming and passing out with Heine having to catch her before he unceremoniously drops her on the cement like the jerk he is? ... not so much advantage.)

        Physically, while Naoto has her agility, she isn't as strong as others (a common tradeoff for being fast). Brute force isn't everything in a battle, but it's definitely something not in Naoto's playing cards.
    Suggested Power Reductions:
      Despite being a very formidable fighter, Naoto (at least as far as canon has shown) is still displayed as human. Even with being from the Underground, Naoto has no special abilities associated with her (no increased heal time, no known mutant effects, no out of the ordinary ability to take mass amounts of damage without suffering from the pain of it, etc).

      None of her skills are particularly super human, either, and although there is mention/speculation that the Katana she has may somehow have special abilities, Naoto is (currently) unable to access them, anyway.

      However, I am more than open to the mods and their suggestions should they feel power reductions are still necessary!#writing samples :: first[PHONE CALL]

      [On her end of the line, she's silent for several seconds, the sound of the phone making a connection momentarily surprising her.]

      I can't believe this. [Her voice gets louder and she's probably still talking to herself, not ready to accept that she'll have to actually hope this works and she can truly get in contact with another party on the other end of the line.] One minute somewhere familiar, and then the next...

      ...What kind of ridiculous joke...? This isn't happening...

      [Finally after a stretched moment of silence, she bites the bullet, suppressing her frustration in favor of curt politeness.]

      Hello? Is anyone there? If someone would be so kind as to answer a few questions, it'd be greatly appreciated. #writing samples :: thirdShe didn't understand, but the rage burned from the bottom of her throat, twisting and knotting into a lump that made it hard to swallow. Impossible, she mentally reassured herself. Just impossible.

      -And yet, here she was, blade drawn defensively as she stood in what she swore was a once empty street. It had been shock enough to one moment be with Nill, looking over towards the girl as she busied herself in attempts to continue learning to sew-her newest victim one of Heine's coats-and the next watch the world spin and peel away as nausea overcame her with an accompanying head pain the drove her to her knees. It had been bad enough that she never quite passed out, but somewhere between that wave of vomit-inducing sensations and landing in these streets she'd lost the memories of what happened in between.

      But this?

      This. (No.)

      Seconds ticked, pounded away in her head into what seemed like hours as she stared, eyes narrowed at the slumped body, soaking in its own blood (and then some, quite possibly). She'd seen this scene before-or, at least, something that closely resembled this scene countless times within her mind. Just a knock off event instead of reliving the real thing as she'd learned to control herself, with a no-face no-name puppet as the victim instead of the one she came to respect, the one she didn't understand, the one she cried over (-A broken video tape that replays over and over again).

      But, to say all those things meant that she was dreaming, didn't it? That this was familiar territory. That she was in some type of control.

      Naoto knew that that wasn't the case here at all.

      And yet, it could be nothing else (It could be anything else, Naoto. Where the hell are you?). Because this couldn't be real (This place... Where is Nill?). This had already happened; a shadow in her past, an event she saw and experienced only once no matter how many times she saw it behind closed eyes, and with no identification it made even less sense to be reality. But, her reassurances slowly started to crumble, disintegrating away into dust when the realization came that the blood was moving, still spreading across the ground, staining and seeping into the cracks in the street. When it came as far as to pool around her boots-reaching out and grasping, sticking, thickly to the black soles-she stiffened, staring hard down at the scene before slowly lifting a boot, watching the blood slowly drip from the bottom back to the saturated ground. She frowned further, proceeding to quickly swipe one finger down across the rubber sole and bring some of the liquid back up for better examination. Naoto's attention was only on her fingers a moment before it was back to the body.

      Her thought process changed. Coldly calculating and deducing the situation before her, somewhere between losing her composure in rage and in shock, the young woman concluded that it was possible she was simply losing her mind.

      This was not a dream (Really...).

      But, this wasn't real, either (Are you sure?).

      The sudden feeling of something-no, someone-leaning in over her shoulder, and their hot, damp breath pressing against her ear (carrying an all too familiar sound of amusement) confirmed everything. She was fucking gone, wasn't she? Even without a word, she knew that presence, knew that heat, and knew that (no no NO) this wasn't possible in a dream or a reality. She had to be losing her mind for her not notice another person, to allow such that someone could so suddenly, especially this-and she shifted, turning to look, blade ready at confirmation only to find...

      ...no one there. So she stood, grip tightening on the hilt of her katana, and stared down the empty street in disbelief, suspicion and confusion, all clashing around through and around her before crumpling down together in a heap of uselessness.

      And when Naoto turned back to where the body had been, it was gone as well. The blood? Gone without a trace of its existence, even on her boots.

      It was gone even on her gloves, she noted, as she looked back at the no longer stained leather. The street was just as empty as it had been when she swore she first arrived here, whereever here was. Her only companion was the returning acquaintance known as nausea she'd left behind, but she violently fought it back, taking a quick look around before storming off in no particular direction.

      She didn't know what to think, didn't know where to go, but her steps held purpose. And that purpose was to find answers, whether they actually existed or not. #additional notes
