Lovely interview with David Ogden Stiers

I figured people here would appreciate this interview more than my Flist.

(Tweaked and x-posted from my journal.)

Barbarians! You Visigoths! Do you realize you have taken the last vestige of Western civilization left here and you have run it under your pagan wheels?!

6X15 - The Smell of Music

- The inimitable Charles Emerson Winchester, III, played by the equally inimitable David Ogden Stiers.

I think David Ogden Stiers is absolutely beautiful. This man is so incredibly talented, and in so many areas! I was reminded of this when I watched Beauty and the Beast the other day. And yet he seems to have stayed somewhat under the radar all these years. Maybe he just doesn't like the limelight. Or maybe he prefers for his work to speak for itself. Both positions are admirable, though I don't actually know what his reasons are. I only wish more people would know who he is because they are missing out on a huge talent if they don't.

I was searching around for information and came across this wonderful interview. It was only a few years ago that I even learned he conducts orchestras! As the fanatical M*A*S*H fan that I am, this knowledge has so deepened my enjoyment of the show, appreciation of his character and admiration of him as an actor. It's almost like watching the show anew, as I realize that the musical aspects he brought to his character were not faked, but drawn from his own life and heart.

This article says he's retired, which makes me sad. I'm so used to watching M*A*S*H episodes that I often forget how much time has passed since they first aired. But apparently he has a different definition of 'retired' than the usual, because from what I'm reading here, he is as busy as ever. I selfishly hope he never fully disappears from view, and that he has many more productive and happy years ahead of him.
