#1 {Prussia/Hungary}
Romance/Angst

He was not made to love.

That was France's forte: to kiss and to hold and to whisper sweet nothings long into the night.

No. He was born out of gunpowder and iron; his christening was to the roar of cannons and the dying yells of men.

He is Prussia, one who only knows of death and conquest.

Stupid fool. How could he let himself love another? It isn't as if he is some mere human.

He cannot afford to love; he doesn't know how to love.

That is why Hungary belongs to Austria.

#2 {Denmark/Sweden}
Friendship/Angst
[Matthias = Denmark, Kristian = Norway]

He hadn't seen the Danish man for a good two weeks.

Strange really, as they were connected to each other by a bridge which, technically, meant that they could see each other every weekend, if they so wished.

He supposed that it wasn't an issue of Matthias not wanting to visit. After all, they had their own issues to deal with: he was living with Tino and the bundle of joy that was Peter, and Matthias was still unsuccessfully trying to woo Kristian.

Berwald couldn’t help but wonder why he didn't visit though, if only a little.

He didn't miss the anger and harsh words and exchanged blows. No, those could linger in the history books and far, far back in his mind.

What he missed was their sense of brotherhood.
Matthias. Denmark. His older brother; mentor; enemy.
Friend.

Sweden turned away from his bedroom window, and walked downstairs.

#3 {Denmark/Norway}
Romance/Friendship
[Erik = Iceland, Kristian = Norway, Matthias = Denmark]

Iceland couldn’t understand what exactly his brother liked about that ridiculous oaf. He was loud, boisterous, arrogant; and worst of all, completely obsessed with Norway.

Kristian liked to claim that he didn't like Matthias; that he stayed around him simply because he bought him food, or let him dote over stuffed bunnies in the store window without laughing.

But Erik knew there was more than that. Hell, they'd been practically married for 278 years. It was impossible that the Kingdom of Norway did not have feelings about the Kingdom of Denmark that went any further than selfish interest.

And so when Denmark came to the next world meeting dressed as a dinosaur (Prussia’s idea), Iceland wasn't all that surprised to see a smile; albeit a very tiny one, grace Norway's usually expressionless face.

#4 {France/Spain}
Romance/Friendship
[Loosely based on the song ‘Without Question’ by Elton John, from the Road to El Dorado]

The older France got, the more he saw and experienced; the more he came to realise one thing:

He was completely in love with Spain.

There was nothing he didn't like about Antonio. The younger nation (though only slightly) was joyous, passionate, and even his oblivious attitude to everything was strangely charming. Just being in his presence could make a very old nation seem very young again.

France studied him from his position on the couch. Spain was cavorting in and out of the house, bringing in vegetables and alcohol and other produce from the market. He'd woken up at the unheard of hour of 4.a.m, just to be one of the first at the market stalls, with pick of the freshest food.

Francis was not a morning person. He had been coming down the stairs when the back door was flung open and a cheery -too cheery, at this ungodly hour- Antonio had coming rushing in, yelling something about grapes and how the first wines of the season were just coming in.

Now there was something France could appreciate.

He smiled broadly, bid Spain a good morning, before flinging himself onto the sofa like a man who had just collapsed.

Spain ran over, face genuinely worried.

“Francis, are you all right!? Did something happen? Are you ill!?”

“Mon Dieu Antonio, I'm fine. Not everyone is as lively as you in the morning.”

So that’s how it happened; France face down on the couch (pretending to be asleep), and Spain pulling in groceries.

Francis smiled, pulled himself up and wandered over to his brother (who was at this moment inspecting a crate of fresh tomatoes), before kissing him lightly on the cheek.

Spain jumped.

“Francis, what was that for?”

“Parce que je t'aime, mon frère. Je t'aime.”

#5 {England/Japan}
Friendship/Angst

He answers the door with a polite greeting, leads his guest into the main room, and proceeds to offer him a cup of tea.

England accepts (of course he would), Japan thinks, and he walks over to get the teapot. He's brought out the expensive English tea and biscuits especially for this occasion; he wants England to remember how special their friendship is.

Was, he corrects himself.

England takes the teacup and biscuits with a curt nod. He notices the imported beverage, he knows Japan must have planned months for this and spent a fortune, but he says nothing.

Later, when the sun is setting and the white walls of Japan's house have been bathed in an orange glow, they sit together, not saying anything, but merely listening to the chirp of insects and the sound of running water from a stream. Far off in somewhere, England can hear the distant roar of traffic and human activity, and he realises that Japan isn’t the awkward, isolated person he met all those years ago, begging for company.

And somehow, it makes him sad.

He moves to stand and take his leave, but is stopped by the feel of Kiku's hand on his own. He looks down at it silently, and when Japan realises what he's doing he blushes furiously before removing it.

Kiku wants to say something, wants to tell Arthur that he doesn’t have to leave; he can stay in the spare bedroom that is always free, that hasn't been disturbed since 1921. They could spend the night together, wake up early to watch the sunrise, and talk about this and that, and this and that.

But he says nothing, and England walks away.

Notes:
# 2 - 'connected to each other by a bridge'
The Øresund Bridge connects the cities of Copenhagen, Denmark and Malmö, Sweden.

# 3 - 'practically married for 278 years'
The former political entity of Denmark-Norway lasted from 1536 - 1814.

# 4 - '“Parce que je t'aime, mon frère. Je t'aime.”'
"Because I love you, my brother. I love you."

'Without Question' by Elton John. Rewatching this movie again, all I could think of was how perfect France and Spain would fit.

# 5 - 'that hasn’t been disturbed since 1921'
The Anglo-Japanese Alliance began to fall apart in 1921. That was the last time Arthur stayed at Kiku's house.
