Reassuring that I'm heard, but...reassuring otherwise...? No...terrifying.

So, I wrote to Senator Maria Cantwell (of Washington) to inform her of the position of the majority of people of the ages of 18-26, on the draft. I demonstrated to her how it is like taxation without representation in my letter, and I tried to best express the views of the majority of people in Eastern Washington University, that, like me detest making a draft for battles that we need have no part in. Surprisingly, there was an actual response to my writings. Whether it was really written by Maria Cantwell or her Secretaries, I have no idea. Regardless, the information contained within...frightens me. Here is the letter.

Dear Mr. Frank:

Thank you for contacting me regarding the Universal National
Service Act of 2003 (S. 89). I appreciate hearing from you about
this important issue.

As you know, on January 7, 2003, Senator Hollings introduced the
Universal National Service Act of 2003, which would require that
all young persons in the United States, including women, perform
a period of military service for the national defense and homeland
security. The bill was referred to the Senate Armed Services
Committee where it awaits further review. Please be assured that
should I have the opportunity to vote on this or similar legislation,
I will keep your views in mind.

The Selective Training and Service Act of 1940 created the
country's first peacetime draft and formally established the
Selective Service System as an independent federal agency.
Registration continues today as a hedge against underestimating
the number of servicemen needed in a future crisis. The obligation
of a man to register is imposed by the Military Selective Service
Act, signed into law June 24, 1948. The Act establishes and
governs the operations of the Selective Service System.

In the context of the current mobilization of our existing
capabilities, I believe that any consideration of reinstating the draft
should be based upon our military requirements.
Sincerely,

Maria Cantwell
United States Senator

So, I think it is safe to say, that since our other senator doesn't use email, trying to convince our senate that we have, you know, VALUE to our lives at the age of 18-26 seems pretty futile. I guess we could just go without the tens of thousands of the worlds next inventors, researchers, teachers, etc. What a great idea when we are in a recession, we'll just try and kill off the group of the educated, and they won't be able to protest, because we'll close off the boarders, chase them down, and drag them off somewhere to help us kill the innocents in order to continue the Oligarchy posing as a democratically elected republic. Did I miss anything???
