Phalla

No, J'aime, not Phallus.

Phalla is the ground rules for a forum game that has many different variations and themes. The basic idea is that you get a bunch of people interested in playing (the more the merrier) and assign them into secret groups. No one knows what group anyone else is in to start off, even people in the same group. In addition, some people are given identities with special powers - more on that later. Every round, everyone in the game gets to vote for someone they think is suspicious - at the end of the round, the person with the most votes is eliminated from the game (captured, arrested, killed, or turned into a zombie depending on the theme of your game). Each group has their own win conditions which may change over the course of the game.

Here is the Heroes Phalla, as an example.

There are 4 groups:
Citizens (superheroes are in this category)
The Linderman Group
The Company
Sylar

The Citizens group also contains many superhero identities, for example:
Peter - can copy the powers of other superheroes he has come in contact with and use them once.
Hiro - is able to use his sword power to eliminate a person once per x rounds, and is able to stop the voting early once per x rounds.

The Citizens group has the primary win condition of stopping the bomb from destroying New York. They have an alternate win scenario of killing Sylar and Ted Sprague.

So you end up with like 20 people that don't know where each other's loyalties lie. In the first round they vote someone off randomly, Sylar uses his special power to kill off a couple more people, and Ted Sprague might nuke someone. The Linderman Group might kill someone, and The Company may bag someone (attempting to capture superheroes). Special powers are generally used behind the scenes (contacting the moderator via private message). Discussion and dwindling numbers cause people to form alliances, which are often broken (am I negotiating with Sylar?). Tension runs high because the identities of people are announced when they are eliminated (Crap! Mohinder Saresh just got killed by Sylar!)

It may sound confusing, but because it is run by a moderator, all you have to worry about is voting and using your special power (if you have one).

I think we could run a version of this on LJ, if we had enough interested people. Probably not Heroes because I know a lot of people don't like it, but perhaps a generic murder-mystery, or some other popular fiction... Maybe even............... Harry Potter.
