Good News and Horrible News

Alright, so look at this. I'm not confident in my own ability to summarize this article in a clear and unbiased fashion, so it is left up to the reader as an exercise.

People are turning in all kinds of great stuff for the Capsize campaign, which is always awesome. More involved is more interesting. We've got pictures, write-ups and more, all posted on the Capsize PlaybyWeb site. You should check it out, if you like that kind of thing.

I've never really been one for drawing, myself. Lately I've been doing a lot of work with creating maps in Photoshop CS2, but that's a whole different method from drawing by hand. Last night I finally decided to try to pick it up and started drawing an airship. It turned out pretty well, but there are a lot of different things I want to do with it so I decided to use my CS2 experience to my advantage. I scanned the picture and imported it to Photoshop, and used a second layer to trace over my lines using the pen path tool. Now all of the curves on the sails and hull are smooth lines, and there aren't any smudges or anything. I still need to fix up a few details but for the most part I'm very pleased. The best part is that now I can color it without having to worry about losing any of the detail. I just have to pick a style that works for me. The paint bucket is a no-no, because it doesn't look natural enough. I'm planning on trying to color it in a layer underneath the actual drawing, so that I can kind of smudge it around and paint across the lines without causing the pencil lines to disappear. I've actually got this particular style in mind where I just quickly hash back and forth with a paintbrush-looking brush type and create a sort of rough, snapshot kind of feel. I'm not sure if it will work of course, but it will be worth trying. I'll probably apply shadows first, I don't know. I've never done that before.

It may seem like a lot of work, but this is the stuff that I'm interested in. Not D&D or this particular campaign per se. I'm more dedicated to creating and fleshing out worlds. That I can host a game for others to enjoy is simply a spectacular by-product.
