I was reading an article about a new English translation of Les Miserables, and this bit quite dismayed me:

Norman Denny, whose translation of Les Misérables was published by Penguin Classics in 1980, and which is probably the translation that most English readers know, did so much smoothing that, even including the two sections on convents and slang that he turned into appendices, his version is still 100,000 words shorter than Rose’s.

Boo! That's the version I read. And it will drive me crazy that I read something so abridged. But I don't think I have the strength to make it through Les Mis again. The parts I liked, I really liked. The parts I didn't, I don't think I can read again. Hmmph. How irritating.
