I got back from vacation. At first I didn't want to go, and when we got there I still didn't want to be there, because while I like the beach I am, in the long-term, not one for extremely hot weather, and there was nothing much to do besides broil in the sun and broil in the water. Although there was a waterslide. And it's a pain in the ass to smother yourself in sun lotion for half an hour and then have to be careful not to get wet or smudge it or wait for it to dry for another half hour so your pale polish ass doesn't get burnt. (burned?) And then towards the end of the week I said jee, it's kind of nice to sit here and read and having no pressure on you at all. whee! Alas, it was too late for my appreciation and I had to go back.
And one of the best things about vacation is that I manage to concentrate enough to finish books I buy.
I read:
-
The Red Tent which I had wanted to read for a while. I thought it was good but I dunno if it's for anyone who doesn't enjoy Bible stories and or history/that period in history.
-
Marvel 1602. This was a comic book by Neil Gaiman and is about what it would be like if the X-Men and other comic book superheroes were set in the early 17th century. I was intrigued because again, the historical time period and it was like X-Men for beginners, which was ideal for me because I don't know any X-Men versions except the movies and well, an old cartoon show that I used to watch. Even though I didn't know some of the other characters it didn't take away from the story.
-
The first of the "His Dark Materials" trilogy. I saw this recommended in a few places so I decided to pick it up too. I don't have much to say about it, except it kept me reading and I can't wait to read the sequels, so I recommend it.
-And yes, I did read the
novelization of "The Revenge of the Sith. I got it last Christmas when I was still on a super Star Wars high, and never managed to read the whole thing. It was alright, but I don't know if knowing what was gonna happen exactly made it a slow read. Pretty much like the movie, I guess: the character parts were alright, but the parts about Grievous and the dark side of the force and blah blah made me snore. Needed more pictures of Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christenson, I say.
In other news Christmas is upon us and that means annoying Christmas commercials. I saw a K-Mart commercial about a sale for pre-decorated with lights Christmas tree and my sister argued that this meant our society will become totally dependant on other people to do stuff for us. I replied that this was only lights and that some people need help/don't have time what have you to pick out a tree and decorate every little piece of it. But then I saw on the news a segment about a woman who wraps presents for a fee and for $100 will do all your presents for you. So maybe I'm seeing her side of the argument. Look, just don't wrap the present them people, OK? And it's true that some people may be able to afford it. But then those people already have a maid to wrap their presents for them, so they won't be needing the services of the present wrapping lady. :)
