Well. The big news came, we know who's the 11th Doctor.

I put my reaction on doctorwho, if anyone's interested in digging through the 154649 reaction posts.

As I'm still watching DW, I figured I could, as an exercise, write some review of what I am watching. Probably won't do Season 1 or 2 review, as it's been a couple of days now, but I did write season 3 review as it went.

Here goes.

Smith and Jones, the Shakespeare Code & Gridlock - all pretty decent stories, if a little simple. The quote-Shakespeare-in-front-of-Shakespeare thing was a bit cheap. And lots of Suicidal!Doctor. Honestly. The man wants dead. And Martha is all "don't you dare to die, I must get to snog you!"

but then?

rubbish

rubbish

more rubbish

Daleks in Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks? WTF?! I don't think there were five minutes of both of these episodes I went without going "You've got to be kidding me". How did that even get accepted into production?! Human-Daleks? Pig-slaves? The Doctor HELPING THE DALEKS?

Honestly. It's like a bad, bad fanfic. Oh, and more Suicidal!Doctor.

The Lazarus Experiment? Oh yes, the human has a form of a scorpio hidden in his DNA. With jaws very much resembling these of those Uber-Vampires from Blade: Trinity. The whole episode is very The Fly. I kept hoping for Jeff Goldblum to appear. Bonus for stupid hint at Lazarus revival, didn't see that one coming with this name. No explanation for the revival, too. Doctor's still suicidal.

42 is, on the other hand very Alien, as in Ridley Scott's Alien (you know, Sigourney Weaver, the ultimate space heroin. God, I'd like to see those again). And guess what. Doctor's still suicidal. And screams a lot. I mean, A LOT. Oooh, the drama. And we all get a BIG flashback to The Impossible Planet/Satan's Pit, don't we? Even the props are the same. Oh Martha, you are smart and all, but you're not Rose, sorry. Go snog that pilot some more, he's actually interested.

And then, Human Nature/The Family of Blood. FINALLY some really excellent episodes. Loved them. Don't understand why Smith would fall for the nurse (except she was the only woman around who wasn't a maid), but still loved them. Really, David Tennant at his best. Beautiful, beautiful story. Brownie points for that kid from Love Actually.
And not suicidal!Doctor.

Blink. Can I hear BRILLIANT? Honestly, one of the best ever in the new series. I loved it. The angels were scary - I like it when the stories are dark. The going back and never returning? Doctor being stuck without the TARDIS? Not saving the world for once? And Martha supporting the Doctor (I snorted, I honesty did)? And the ending (I love the breaking of the fourth wall effect when it's used in a good way). Bravo, Steven Moffat, BRAVO!

And then... the big finale. Utopia/The Sound of Drums/The Last of the Time Lords.
Well. It was both good and bad. Good - John Simm pure awesome OMG. And he was so hyper too, is that a Time Lord trait? Seriously, what are they on? Oh wait, I know that one. Adrenaline. More good - Jack's back. We all love Jack. There was too little Jack. But what we got was adorable. All the flirtyness, and woo, immortality. And, best entrance ever. Flying 100 trillions years ON the TARDIS not in it!
Jack's talk with the Doctor about his immortality and what happened to Rose? One of the best scenes.
ALSO - the underplayed relationship between Master and Doctor - yeah, I know he's in the old series, but I would like to see more of that! It was so good, especially the Master's death scene.
Oh, and Doctor had no time to be suicidal.
And no Daleks this time, thank God.
Now, the rest. End of the universe? Always going for the extreme, eh, Rusty? People going to Utopia suddenly changed into metal football balls? When did that happen? The time reversal? A bit over-the-top. Doctor's going all Jesus on Saint Peter (or maybe Judas?)!Master? I mean, honestly. It all got so heroic and epic and oooooh, I just don't like it. Would love to hear more about Lucy Saxon, though. And the Master's ring.

Now, the look at the companion. Martha. First of all, WTF, wasn't that chick killed off in the last season's finale? Is Great Britain that short of good looking actresses?
On a second thought, perhaps. I do remember visiting London.
Anyway. For all of her being a brilliant almost-doctor, all she's done is CPR on the Doctor (cause he's suicidal lots and lots). And that bandage on the wrist in "Evolution of the Daleks". But yeah, she saved the world and Doctor had his Hail Mary moment. I felt as if her job throughout the season was simply to run after the Doctor, though. Except for the finale she never really got to do anything cool. Except CPR on suicidal!Doctor. Still think Rose going Bad Wold was cooler, but that's just me. Not very much into the humanity saving itself. And her crush on the Doctor? Well, understood if it developed throughout the series, I mean, the Doctor is lovable, but she meets him while being transported to the moon and he briefly kisses her, and SHE SHOULD BE PANICKED and she does what, jelly legs? Hazed look? Come ON. She was supposed to be smart, wasn't she?

All in all - season 3, not bad, if you don't count the Big Black Hole of the four episodes that don't make much sense. The Doctor's emo, but he still kinda kicks ass, and David Tennant makes all sorts of funny faces. And is still sexy while doing it, that's rare. I didn't feel it had that fresh kick of the first two seasons though. Or maybe I just grew attached to Rose. Doomsday was ONE HELL of a finale.
Maybe that's it. The first and second season was about the Doctor and Rose changing, but in season 3, do we really get to see them change? Martha doesn't change really, she just gets to do something properly for once. The Doctor calms down in the end of the season, but then he suffers the loss of the Master (and I bet he'll be all emo again). So it's all back then, no progress? Just few colourful adventures?
You could do better than that.

Off to see Torchwood now!
