He answered him that he wouldn’t want to be outed. He came from a military family, 5th generation of duty and honour; he should have a wife, 2 or 3 kids, a nice house and a dog. Charlie told him that it was okay, that he was happy he let him in his heart for a while, that he loved him and always will.

Valentine’s Day at the Eppes would be nicer if Charlie’s had been there. Amita told them that he was working, Alan grumbled, said that it wasn’t a way to treat his future wife. Amita laughed, explained, slowly, that Charlie and her would never be married; that she loved her work too much to become a housewife; that they keep this going on just because of Alan. Besides, Charlie was more gay than straight and, apparently, had found his soul mate. Colby twitched in his chair, looking at Claire, his girlfriend. She was nice, sweet, understanding about his job. She was perfect.

Then they received the call. Apparently, Charlie had a secret admirer, a mentally ill secret admirer, who had shot him. And now, Charlie was in the hospital, fighting for his life, and all that Colby could think about was how stupid he was. Charlie could die. Charlie could die. Charlie’s heart stopped for a while, the doctor said, but he was okay now. Charlie had a file with him, clinging to it like a desperate. A file with the name of Colby Granger. Colby took it and read it. It was an investigation, on James Granger, Colby’s father. The proof that the mistake wasn’t James’ but the accountant’s. He had bought pieces of lower quality and kept the rest of the money. The accident-suicide of James wasn’t one neither. The accountant covered his traces. But Charlie figured it out. And Colby cried. He hoped, but it was a fragile and small hope, that Charlie could be able to forgive him.

14 February. Midnight.
Remembering about the day Charlie set him the question, he wished he could change his answer.
