One day a LONG ass amount of years ago, scientists spotted a large a asteroid heading toward Earth with their high tech telescopes. They named the asteroid Mobius. Based on calculations, they had around about a good fifty years to figure out a plan to stop it before it would strike Earth. After spending around 25 years in trying ways to stop it, or knock it off course- they all failed.
Eventually a group of scientists(which contained ancestors from the Robotnik family) eventually went and said "Fuck it! Let's just leave the planet!" by suggesting to fly off into space in giant space starships/colonies.(think of it like in Wall-E. Only not filled with fat lazy people.) After spending 6 years on continuously pressing and lobbying for the suggestion/idea- with word finally getting out about the approaching asteroid and panic starting to spread, a large number of governments, powers, and corporations, caved in and made the decision to begin funding the scientist's project, desperate it would save humanity.
For the next sixteen years, the group, and among massive amounts of help from other volunteers and workers, worked at back breaking pace and constant endless days and nights to build and prepare the space colonies in time. Constantly working their fingers to the bone! The Robotnik ancestor was the main person in charge and oversaw the project, as he was the one who designed the ships and even suggested the idea in the first place and was also the main driving force of it. Their country was not the only one in the process of making space colonies to leave the planet with, but their project was the main and most prominent out of all of them. Meanwhile, during the building proccess, researches and scientists went out and gathered DNA of various livestock animals, and other species, and plant seeds, for future purpose of cloning them to obtain a source of food. During the same period of time, there were other major groups working on building underground labs and colonies for people to survive and live under; as not the whole world was on board with the prospect of leaving the planet and eventually returning on ships.
With three years left to go before the Asteroid was expected to impact, the project was finally completed and now had their next step to undergo before taking off- choosing who and which people would come aboard on the six colonies that were built. The people who funded the project, taken part in building the colonies, or had taken part in any development of the overall project, and excessively trained future colony and staff members, were obviously going to go on them. The first people who were chosen were a large amount of teachers and educators- as the Robotnik ancestor believed that educating future generations was vital to the human race's survival and further thriving. Next group of people who were chosen were various different types of scientists, and doctors, surgeons, and other medical specialists. Next up were experienced soldiers, fighter pilots, and officers, for self defense purposes. After all of that came to choosing civilians. As there were only so many people they could fit onto each ship, compared to the millions and millions of remaining humans still on Earth, it was decided that if anybody were interested in joining them that they would have to go through a screening process to make sure they were capable of coming on board. As the Robotnik ancestor saw it, if somebody wanted to come on board, 'said person HAD to make themselves useful some way.(children exempted. Their parents just had to allow them to get education when on board.) If somebody was too unhealthy and couldn't make themselves useful in anyway, then they were rejected entry, as they saw them as a burden that would drag the others down and use up resources faster. The terminally ill were outright denied, as they were going to die anyway. However, there was an exception if 'said family members requested to bring them on board to spend their final years or days with them- as long as they agreed to the condition that they let their late family member's body be used for some form of recycling or be used in research by on board scientists. Among the many civilians that were allowed onto the colonies were the ancestors of Danny and Stuart. (the only other two out of four prominent human characters in the present AU timeline. The other two being Eggman, and his cloned offspring Ovi/Christopher.)
With less than a year left before Mobius was expected to impact with Earth, most countries and societies have fallen into complete turmoil. Riots, looting, and mass panic completely going on worldwide. Governments completely shutting down and things fallen more and more into anarchy. After a good number of chosen people for their ships were killed in riots and murders, and Martial Law officially being declared in their country- the Robotnik ancestor went "Everybody! Inform the future staff and chosen people to gather what they can and to meet up and aboard their assigned ships on *insert date and time*. We're leaving Earth ahead of schedule, before things further take a turn for the worse. Be absolutely discreet and silent about any of this to outsiders!" Anybody who was late and didn't make it passed the scheduled lift-off time would be left behind. No exceptions at all!
So they manage to get just about everybody that was chosen on the board the ships, and take off and leave Earth. The people who didn't make it were, unfortunately, either arrested and executed by the now ruling military government, or were murdered in riots or by looters- in between the time period of being informed. After a couple of months after leaving Earth, Mobius arrives and crashes into the planet, directly onto a city. The surviving people who hadn't taken refuge in the underground labs or colonies after impact eventually died off, shortly after.
Little did they know about the asteroid, Mobius, was that it contained a strange and alien energy that would eventually become known as Chaos Energy in the present. When Mobius struck Earth and broke into pieces scattering around the planet's atmosphere, the energy ended up causing the surviving animal species that came into contact with it to evolve like crazy, eventually becoming the species to be known as Mobians. Due to allot of animals having some form of human contact over the years, especially domesticated ones, they evolved with allot of the human traits and working brains without even knowing it. Even the ones that have heard humans talk before impact started to speak in a VERY broken version of whatever human language they heard, and further developed the more their brains evolved with each generation. Because of all that, Mobians have a much higher tolerance and ability to use Chaos Energy without causing harm to themselves, unlike humans. The very strong energy near the impact sight eventually served in the creation of the Chao species, after it came into contact with some surviving organisms, too.
Not only did the Chaos energy cause surviving species to evolve way faster than normal- but the energy in the impact zone formed with the Earth's minerals and living things directly hit in it's path and eventually become the Master Emerald and the 7 Chaos Emeralds. Yep. Not only are the Chaos Emeralds made out of minerals, but also from dead people and animals! Which is why the abilities of how to use the Chaos Emerald's powers are so emotion and thought based, as Chaos Energy itself happens to also be- hence why animals evolved more similar to humans based on what they saw, heard, and experienced from them. The energy in the impact zone was also so strong that it caused a very giant amount of land mass to rise up into the air, flip the bird to physics, and become what is now known as Angel Island.
The now Mobian species eventually discover the underground labs and colonies after around 15,000 years after the asteroid impact. All the humans who took refuge in them had died off, as well- due to resources running out and corruption taking over. Even humans in cryogenic type sleep down in them had died, due to there no longer being a working power source to keep the chambers going. After discovering the remains of the technology, and anything else that was photo, video, media, culture, or fossil wise, the Mobian's become completely fascinated and interested in discovering more about the assumed extinct human race- believing that they might hold the key to why the Mobian race got to where they are today. They realize that, based on what remains they discovered, just how similar the human species were to them. Not only did they become completely infatuated with finding out more about the human race, but the Mobian race also begin to invent and build structures heavily based and inspired by what they discovered from the assumed-extinct humans.
Fast forward around 130 years later and suddenly... the humans that left on the six ships/space colonies the Robotnik ancestor was a driving force behind, return to Earth- once their probes they sent to the planet tell them the conditions and atmosphere are livable enough again. As you can guess- the Mobians completely shit bricks when they see that humans aren't extinct at all. They have so many questions they want to ask the humans, obviously.
For the remaining human race who left on the ships, it had only been around 200 years, due to where they went in space. The newest generation that we're born on them and were returning to Earth, were shocked to find out that over 15,000 years had past back on Earth, as opposed to what they where told when of how long it had been since their great-great grandparents left the planet. Not only that, but they were obviously also shocked to see that the planet was now populated by super evolved forms of animals that not only had physical traits similar to them, but also talked in languages and used technology and inventions based similar to theirs. They were relieved when they saw that this new Mobian race they met appeared to be very interested in them and wanted to learn more about them; as opposed to being hostile.
Doing everything the best they could at avoiding at offending this new race- having no idea how their customs and cultures worked- the leading human scientists and leaders asked the Mobian's they met to teach them everything they knew about how the planet was now like, how to better survive what might now be inhabiting it, and if they could help what remained of the human race to get settled back on Earth- in exchange they would tell the Mobians everything they were dying to learn about the human race that they thought went extinct thousands of years ago, and even help the Mobians societies advance and thrive to the level to that of human towns and cities did before the asteroid hit, and even give them protection from outside threats and invaders. The last thing the remaining humans wanted was to start a major conflict or war with the now dominating Mobian race on the planet, and figured since they had been on Earth for thousands of years now, that they would have more knowledge about it. Thus they concluded it would be very vital to the survival of the human race if them and as much of the Mobian race became allies. Thus a cooperative partnership between Mobians and most remainders of the human race were formed.
Fast forward around 200 years later- the present time of the AU. Thanks to the help of the human technology, knowledge, and partnership they were given in exchange for helping them, tons of Mobian societies and towns are now thriving more than ever. Mobotropolis being the most notable- and the human race now has their own communities, towns, and cities of their own built in various places on the planet, though most of them are nearby their allied Mobian cities/communities. Station Square and Westopolis being the most prominent, human populated cities. The human population on the planet, compared before the asteroid struck, is currently far, far, FAR lower compared to what it was. Because of that, you don't see them anywhere nearly as much as Mobians. So the humans are currently busy dropping their pants and working hard at repopulating. During the 200 year time period before the present, the humans on the ships from the other countries that left Earth eventually returned. But unlike the Robotnik ancestor's leaders and team, they instead branched away and formed socities of their own and viewed the Mobians as an inferior burden. The current leader powers of the communities formed from that group of humans are currently trying to start shit with the Mobians. The allied human communities with the Mobians are facepalming hard.
Side note: The Eclipse Cannon was made with the intention of using it to knock anymore future on-coming asteroids off course. The amount of energy needed depended on how big the oncoming target was. Gerald never intended on it being used to destroy entire planets and Earth... but then he went crazy and all that stuff.
Also, after being told about Chaos Energy by the Mobian's, human scientists and inventors saw immense potential in using it as a new alternate energy source. With the collaboration of human scientists/inventors and Mobians, they invented a safe and very efficient way of converting Chaos energy into a fuel source- Chaos Drives. The issue of a reliable fuel and energy source is no longer a problem now.
Being able to start up farming and a source of livestock wasn't an issue for the humans, as well. Since the they were able to clone and genetically engingeer their own livestock, thanks to the DNA and seeds they brought aboard the ships before the asteroid impact.
