Back when my kitchen doorstep mini-porch had a "scary" slope down to the lawn, I used to have a doorstep frog - which spent much of its time lurking under the shelf of the back door frame. The current replacement pair of brick steps probably make the porch a lot less accessible to frogs. But instead I now seem to have a small brown fluffy feathery thing roosting under the frame which pops out whenever I disturb it by opening the door.
I *think* it's a juvenile dunnock. It doesn't fly - just hops and scuttles around a lot. This probably means there's something wrong with it, since they don't normally spend more than a day being quite so feeble about flying and it has some other very odd behaviours too. But it's vaguely feeding itself rather than having any obvious parents and doesn't have much of a gape left. So I've been providing water and oats and keeping the main cat predator away.
