I thought that perhaps I had another week before the newt migration began. But I came across an early newt on the path last night. It wasn't at all active until it had spent some time sitting on my hand, warming up a bit. At which point it started crawling around slowly and being more convincingly a newt instead of a twig.
It would probably have been even livelier if I'd had my newt rehydration pot with me. However, I was able to find an unobstructed stretch of fence through which to post it - to speed it on its way to the lake (instead of bringing it all the way home with me). Whereas it had started out in an area pretty much blocked with debris.
So now I need to go out with my "newts crossing" warning signs, to post on the lamp-posts along the path, sooner than I expected.
