I've always been a bit dog obsessed, but never truly realized how much so until this year when we got our Pit, Canela. She is literally the love of my life (aside from Gavin of course, hah) and has opened my eyes to things about human nature I would have never realized before. This has come from a combination of her breaking every stereotype I had heard about Pit Bulls before I ever met one to how people react towards her (and then me) in public when we're out.
I have never felt so strongly pulled towards something before. People think that Pit Bulls are just another kind of dog. But they aren't. They are overly bred, fought, abused, left in caged and euthanized. So many of them live short lives, never knowing what it's like to be pet, or sleep on a comfy surface or know that you will get fed. They are discriminated against by seemingly almost everyone who does not own and love one themselves.
I rescued a Pit Bull named Bradley from the Miami-Dade Animal Shelter two weeks ago. I found a sanctuary who is taking care of him until he is able to be adopted. He is only one out of millions, but he is alive and now being taken care of. I feel like a lightbulb has gone off, and I find myself wondering how (although I adore teaching) I will be able to live my life without dedicating some portion of it to this.
So I have created a wordpress blog to share what I think, have seen and hope to experience.
