My PI today informed the lab by email that he wants us all to talk to a guy who's visiting from Missouri in 30 min slots. Fair enough maybe, but he didn't say what that will involve, and when he sent the schedule round he'd put me in 45 minutes. I'd not heard about this guy until today (never read any of his papers), so I'm pretty certain that his research has very little in common with mine. Why I (someone who doesn't talk much about my own research or ask much about other people's) am expected to entertain him for 45 minutes instead of someone more obvious, I don't know. - Looking back over that schedule I see that SM is expected to talk to him for an hour. Maybe this is something secondary metabolism or flux-based? I'd better check out the paper LS sent with the email.

My granddad bought us prosecco from the M&S at the station the last two days that he was here. Yesterday when he was queuing to pay (we'd already been through with some milk and I think the prosecco was an impulse buy on his part) he mimed necking the bottle of wine to me. It was a joke typical of my family.

Eli's perfect with the old guy. She clearly gladdens him, and I'd say that he had a good time primarily because of her and that he probably enjoys her company more than mine. (I do think that this is partly because he sees her behaviour towards me though.)
