The discussion at my house (we had a Lost-watching party) was the the AU was purgatory - but one where they would all find one another. So...everything that happened, happened. Jack died in the bamboo...but Kate didn't die until much, much later which is why she said she "missed him so much". Jack kept getting little flashes from A LOT of people...and he was trying to repress them. Jin and Sun realized they died when they died...but that in this AU purgatory they started their life from where they had left off when Jin first was lost to her. This must be very far in the future because Hurley was Jacob and Ben was his Alper for a LONG time - or so it seems - so perhaps this purgatory is a LONG time after everyone had been dead...who knows. All we know is what Jack's dad said, "There is no time here." Which means that the time does not matter anymore. They didn't all die at the same time, but their souls wanted to be together before going on to the unknown together.
So what keeps hitting me is that Kate lived her whole damned life without Jack...and then got to be with him....Juliet really died and James waited to be with her...Locke really died...but needed to be with these people again...Charlie waited for Claire...all these things. Crazy. Beautiful.
We loved it....

That's actually what I'm leaning towards, that the AU was purgatory. And I totally agree about Jack resisting the little flashes he was getting from people (Locke, Kate). But why didn't Vincent get to go to the special place???
