He plays the moment in his mind, wondering why he hadn't said more.
What do you need?
Why couldn't he have just told her? I need you...I need you to hold me, I need you to promise me you will never leave me. Instead he made an inadequate statement about performing admirably and then walked out of the turbo lift, leaving her alone, never once looking back. Hadn't he learned from the death of his mother? Tomorrow is never promised to anyone, and he needs to tell the ones he holds dear how he feels every day.
So why didn't he tell her? He wouldn't be surprised if she never spoke to him again.
Suddenly, the turbo lift doors opened and there she was, with so much love and concern reflected in her eyes that it momentarily took his breath away. The backlight from the lift shown softly around her features and it instantly recalled to his mind an ancient Earth painting of a celestial being. What was the term for the nimbius of light painted around it? Ah yes, a halo.
And then it hit him. Nyota was his own personal angel. He immediately vowed that from day on, he would never cease letting her know how dear she was to him and how fortunate he was to have her in his life.
