Tribal music is the most basic form of music. It relies on rhythm and beat, and not on melody or such. Rap is at the bottom end of the tribal music spectrum as well, perhaps a step below pure percussion because most percussion music at least involves intricate layering of different instruments whereas rap is simply someone talking semi-rhythmically over a consistent beat.
So by technical standards, rap is tribal music, but it is the most base form of music, and should not even be categorized with music of a higher intelligence. It most certainly should not have won album of the year when far more musically exceptional albums were released (such as Coheed and Cambria's In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3, a sonic masterpiece).
Also, the fact that a rap album won album of the year shows how intellectually stunted American consumers have become as far as music is concerned. The fact that the basest style of the basest form of music won album of the year says a sad word about the American music industry; it insults the masses by saying they are too simple to handle anything that requires the slightest bit of thought (a trend that occurs in hollywood as well).
Basically what I just said is that rap is the simplest music for the simplest people, and according to the beloved RIAA, most of America is pretty simple.
