"Don't Buy" solutions don't work. "Don't buy on a certain day" plans don't work because different people have different days that they don't want us to buy gas on, and it is an inconvenience to you. "Don't buy from a certain company" plans don't work either; gas is supplied by independent contractors who are simply trying to get the best price for gas (the station down the street could be selling gas for $1.50 and be the most popular in town, but the contractors are going to go to the station that is selling for $3.00).
There are ways to reduce energy prices, however it does not involved how you shop for gas. This is a comprehensive plan to deliver cheap energy, and create a sustainable national energy-economy.
1)Call your congresspersons and tell them that you want a REAL energy plan that thoroughly addresses the fact that oil is a finite resource that is quickly running out. There are promising alternatives to gasoline: ethanol, bio-diesel, and hydrogen. Our current energy plan focuses little attention to these renewable sources of fuel, it instead gives further tax-incentives to an oil industry that is enjoying record profits. www.house.gov and www.senate.gov will give you the information that you need to contact your congressperson and your Senator and tell them that it is time to get serious about alternative fuel, and that you want higher CAFE standards on gas milage for cars and light trucks.
2)Drive a car that is the size that you need. There is no execuse for a family of 3 to own a Hummer. Unless you have a large family, drive a coup. Honda Civics (non-hybrid) can get up to 40 miles per gallon. Lets face it, most of us do not need an SUV with a V-8 engine and 4 weel drive. Small cars are easy to manuver, easy to park, and gas efficient.
3)Make your next vehicle purchase a hybrid or an E-85 vehicle. Hybrid cars are a great short term solotion, but they do still run on gas. Call the major car companies and tell them that you want every new vehicle on the lot in the next 5 years to be a hybrid or an E-85. Hybrids have the obvious advantage of using less gas. E-85 is an engine that runs on a mixture of 85% ethanol and 15% gas. Ethanol is made from the fermentation of corn; would you rather buy gas from countries tha we are at war with, buy a product made by American farmers (with the possibility of reinvigorating American small town economies)?
4)This one will hurt you the most, but be more conservative with how you drive. If the trip you are taking is less than half a mile, just walk. Obesity is the number one preventable cause of death in the U.S.A., in dead heat with smoking. Walking is not going to hurt any of us. I understand that most people need to drive, I need to drive to work and school too. However, we can all use a good walk for exercise, if not just for the good of our nation.
These are just a few ideas for long term solutions to our energy problem. If you feel that a viable solution to the problem has been omitted, feel free to add it. Please repost this, as it may at least raise awareness if not cause immediate action.
The boycott is basically FAKE, as well.
