Summary: As a common knight of the King's Guard, Jensen is astonished to be named as Warden to young Jared, a cast-off son of one of the realm's great houses. Upon the unexpected deaths of his father and brother, Jared is compelled to leave the monastery where he was stashed as a child, and take on the title of Lord Padalecki. Jensen must escort Jared to the royal court so the young man can select a cousin to marry from among the warring aristocratic families as a condition for his inheritance.
With Jensen’s encouragement, Jared comes to believe that he is worthy to lead the House of Padalecki. Once they are enmeshed in the intrigues of the Court, however, Jensen realizes he’s fallen unconscionably in love with his ward. Jensen is bound by honor to urge Jared into the arms of another, but it turns out Jared has other plans.

Note: This is my second big bang this year even though it was supposed to be posted first. I have to give huge props to
deirdre_c who managed to craft a fantastic story that just manages to suck you right into such a beautiful time period without you even noticing. The details to the characters are amazing and so true to their core. It's certainly worth the read!
Thank you
deirdre_c for having all the patience in the world with me, you are a total sweetheart and just wonderful to talk and work with as well. I'm very lucky to have nabbed your fic and I enjoyed every minute of working on it.
“Your mount,” Jensen began, as good a place as any. “He’s beautiful. As fine an animal as I’ve seen in all my journeys.” He smiled, nodding down at his own horse. “With the exception of my Shadow here, of course.”
He paddled over to where Jared lingered. But Jared immediately moved away, into shallower water by the pool’s far edge to stand hip-deep near the wall.
Carefully, he watched the motion of Jared’s lance tip, Faith’s stride, timed it so that as they came together, he rose up in his stirrups, angling his shield to make the target-himself-as large as possible.
