I have a bunch of sore muscles. They aren’t killing me, but obviously kayaking this Saturday did it.
I enjoyed kayaking, even though the boat has problems. It doesn’t track worth a damn! I have to constantly keep it going straight. I was aware this would be an issue but it’s still annoying. Also, the seat that comes with it really sucks. It felt too low. Also, getting in and out is a problem with my leg. In fact, I’m going to have to get a new fitting because the leg came loose while I was rowing. I’ve needed a smaller silicon sock for a while now because of the inevitable shrinkage of my limb. Now I have to stop putting it off and get fit for a new one.
My first outing on the river was an unplanned stroke of luck. I just decide to go at a particular time, without thought or consideration to wind or tide influences. Both were near perfect. As my parents here told me, I had better not go out there when the tide is on the out. I’ll get sucked out to sea! This boat isn’t that deep but I could feel the mild flow of the tide coming in. I can only imagine how strong it would have been if the tide was on the way out! I’ll be avoiding kayaking during tide withdrawals.
I paddled around for an hour. I found if fun despite the many challenges I faced, (did I forget to mention I ran aground once?) and the apparent strain on my muscles. I was right about this being a good upper body workout. This will be a perfect way to get an hour of good exercise without using my legs. I knew I’d like it. I used to love the rowing machine I used to have. I considered getting a rowing type boat, but this was a little less expensive and there’s the advantage of facing the way you travel. I’d still like to try a row boat but not right now.
The boat inflated and deflated easily. Cleaning it off afterward took a while, but only because I was exhausted. The boat isn’t all that light. I had to drive it to the park, and carrying it down hill was a chore. Next time I’m going to drive it down to the boat ramp, like everyone with hard shell boats does, and then return the car to the parking lot.
Got snakes? I was asked this three times. Four times if you count my Dad warning me to watch out for snakes. I didn’t see a single snake. But I was told by some people bring their boat in they saw three, two water snakes and a water moccasin. I guess there are snakes around here and I SHOULD be afraid or something. What ever.
Hopefully I will get to go out again during the week, after my shoulders stop smarting. We’ll see. My new job at VSU makes planning more difficult. My Advanced Communications Class ends this Thursday, so I’ll have at least all of next week to try paddling during the morning hours.
