Surprising People

Today I was reminded that people can truly surprise you and it doesn't always have to be a bad thing.

Brian and I spent half the day looking to purchase a new washer to replace the one that decided to flood our sunroom last weekend. After much comparison, we purchased the one we wanted and matching dryer. As we proceeded to load it into Brian's car we were informed of a slight problem. It seems they forgot to tell us that we cannot lay the washer on it's side for transport or we may damage the working parts. And the only way that both were going to fit was laying them down.

Irritated but keeping our cool, we discussed delivery with the warehouse guy helping us. Nearby an older fellow was waiting by his truck and trailer to receive his shiny new toolbox. He asked where we were headed and we told him. He said that it was only a tiny bit out of his way and he offered to help us out.

Brian rode with him so he would not have to struggle to follow us. And on the way he offered the guy some money for his trouble but he refused. He truly did this to be kind to another human being. He did not want or expect to get anything out of it other than "Thank You".

It reminds me of the world I want to live in. It reminds me that even though our society is quite flawed that there are still truly kind people in it. He did not know us at all and no one would have really thought anything wrong of him to have not offered. The fact that he did speaks volumes.

It may sound silly to some people but this guy made our day and possibly our week. I would have survived if we'd had to pay for delivery and had to wait a couple of days to get the new appliances home. But our day is much better having this task checked off the list, not. It's moments like this that renew my faith in people.
