Sport drinks are high calorie affairs. The basic idea is that somebody, an athlete presumably, will require a lot of energy in very short order, and that these drinks will provide that athlete with that energy in the form of sweet, sugary goodness.
That's why I'm confused by the emergence of low calorie sport drinks. Sure, they're delicious, but they don't provide a high-calorie boost to the person drinking them. If the goal is to re-hydrate, then water provides a much simpler and cost effective solution. But if the goal is to support an athlete, then why not buy the full calorie alternative?
There's a very easy answer to this: low calorie sport drinks are not sport drinks at all. They are intended for people who like the taste of sport drinks, but, like me, are far too lazy to actually participate in any sports. They are branded as they are so we may recognize the beverage, but are low in calories so we drink them guilt-free.
This causes a disservice to the athlete. So I suggest this: Orange flavored water, presented by Gatorade. This removes any doubt as to what the true purpose of the beverage truly is.
