Secret Cinema presents MOULIN ROUGE!

After having the best time running away from Rage plagued zombies last year at Secret Cinema Presents 28 Days Later, I had to go back again. To Sel and my absolute delight they chose to do Moulin Rouge. Back in Uni Sel and I used to belt out the Elephant Love Medley in the Student Union. We love this film, so we had to go. And Sel dragged Moose along who had never seen the film before.

The meeting place was Canning Town Station and there we were directed across the road by some French policemen to some steps that led down into the venue. After getting our wrist bands we were led through into the main area and OMG it was amazing what they'd done. It was like walking into a French Bohemian street at the turn of the century. They'd set up stalls, and entire buildings, including a cabaret.

We were given a character to play and an object to bring, which the actors milling around would recognise and you'd be given a task or an interaction. They stayed in character the whole time. Sel found hers straight away and was tasked to write a love letter and deliver it. Which she did and the lovers sang a song on stage. I never found mine, but I guess I didn't ask around enough and no one recognise my yellow hankie was I waving around. It was a little disappointing, but I just loved to whole experience and I get caught up with Sel's.

At one point we were pulled aside to enter a secret location which involved doing some random stuff in a cramped corridor and even had our chests stamped.

Whenever we heard a bell chime we were to go to the main 'street' to sing along to a song from the film. They had actors playing the main roles including Christian, Satine and The Duke.

It was during one of the performances that we were led to the place we'd be watching the film which was a pretty impressive replica of the Moulin Rouge.
Sel, Moose and I had booked seats, so we took our seats on the balcony to watch them film, shown on the big screen. During some of the key moments and musical numbers they had performers on stage, acting out more of less what was on the screen. It was such an awesome way to watch the film. It was especially amazing as I never saw the film when it was originally at the cinema. The only downside of the whole thing was a couple of drunk people in the seats in front who couldn't keep their voices down during some of the quieter scenes.

After the film, we didn't really stay around to party as I had to be up early the following morning for work. Unfortunately London isn't just down the road and I didn't get home until 1:30am. What a way to start a new job. More on that later.

Secret Cinema Moulin Rouge was amazing and I can't wait to see what they do next.
