How to Become a Christian
How to become a Christian based on what the Bible says.
Steps
If you want to be a Christian based on what the Bible says than it is necessary to believe that the Bible has been inspired by God Himself, and says exactly what He wants it to say. Here is what the Bible says about itself:
All scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 2 Timothy 3:16
Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever…But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you. 1 Peter 1:23,25
So then faith [cometh] by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Romans 10:17
And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him [Jesus], Blessed [is] the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked. But he said, Yea rather, blessed [are] they that hear the word of God, and keep it. Luke 11:27,28
For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received [it] not [as] the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe. 1 Thessalonians 2:13
So those who would call themselves Christians must receive the Bible as the words of God, and not the words of man.
Next it is very important to understand why to even become a Christian. The reason is, according to the Bible, all those who have sinned will go to hell. Of course even Christians have also sinned, so there is more, but first here is what the Bible says about sin:
Twice, in both Deuteronomy 5:11 and in Exodus 20:7, God says "'You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain."
Jesus said in Matthew 12:36 "But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment."
Revelation 21:8 says that even those who have ‘simply’ told a few lies will receive an eternal punishment in the lake of fire. “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
So even the common sins that we have all done, such as telling a lie, will be judged by God. The penalty will be eternal death in a lake of fire. This is not a death without conscience, but those who are dead will never die, and the fire will never be quenched. (Mark 9:44,46,48)
Next is it very important that a Christian understands what the Bible says about who God is:
(The Bible says SO many things about who God is, but only a few of those things directly related to becoming a Christian are listed here.)
John 4:8 Says “God is love.”
But God is not an emotionless, mindless, ditsy love. The same God who is love can also be angry.
Psalm 7:11b says “God is angry [with the wicked] every day.”
Psalm 9:16-18 says “The LORD is known [by] the judgment [which] he executes: the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. Meditation. Selah. The wicked shall be turned into hell, [and] all the nations that forget God. For the needy shall not always be forgotten: the expectation of the poor shall [not] perish for ever.”
Basically, God is holy and dwells in light that cannot even be approached. God is love, and God is patient, but the common misconception is that because God is loving, He cannot or will not punish sin. But He will. The Bible says God is known by the judgment he executes. Also, you will die one day, and even this earth will one day come to an end. And when God rolls up the heavens and earth as we now know them like a scroll, all those whose names are not written in the "Lamb's Book of Life" will appear before God for judgment. Only those whose names are written in the Lamb's Book will not be judged. The rest will be judged for ALL their sins, even so much that they will receive eternal judgment for every sinful word they have ever spoken. Jesus Himself said in Matthew 12:36 "But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment." All these quotes are found in the Bible. The punishment is eternal separation from God in the lake that burns with fire, and the fire is never quenched.
Also, Jesus the Messiah who walked on this earth 2000 years ago is the only begotten Son of God. Jesus is also God, and is one with God His Father.
John 1:1-3, 14 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
John 14:10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.
In John 10:30 Jesus says “I and [my] Father are one.”
The only way to become a Christian is to believe in Jesus, and receive by faith His righteousness.
Corinthians 5:21 says "For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him." Three days after Jesus was crucified on the cross and the wrath of God was place on Him, He rose from the dead and was seen by over 500 people. It is not by any good deeds that you will enter heaven, but the good deed of Christ will be credited to your account by believing.
John 3:16 says “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
The Bible also says "The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance." 2 Peter 3:9
Therefore He has given a free gift to anyone that would receive it: Salvation from sin, death, and Hell through Jesus Christ His Son. When Jesus the Messiah died on a cross from crucifixion, He died willingly. He died according to the plan of His Father, who is God of All. And when He died, the WRATH of God towards sin was placed upon Him - that is why His death was SO hard. Yet Jesus Himself was sinless.
Lastly, to be a Christian you must love God with all your heart, soul, strength and mind. This includes obeying His commandments.
“Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments.” 1 John 2:3 So if any person says they are a Christian, but does not live like one, PLEASE don’t believe them. The Bible says that to be saved you must obey what God commands in the Bible.
If you were able to understand what has been said, it is because God Himself has revealed it to you. Acts 26:18 says “To open their eyes, [and] to turn [them] from darkness to light, and [from] the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.” 1 Corinthians 2 gives this further insight.
If you have not understand the words here, please read this again until you do. Romans 10:17 says “So then faith [comes] by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” There will be no greater thing you will ever do than to receive by faith the atonement of Jesus Christ and make Him your Lord and God.
