Superman Died Today
I just read something that troubled me a good bit. Christopher Reeve died today (or rather yesterday-sunday) of a heart attack at 52. Before I even read the headline on the article I thought "superman is dead" and all of these ideas of symbology flooded my head. While I was far from being a comic book person or for that matter a superman movie fan, the idea of what his character stood for and how he the actor were recieved by so many people burned into me. The abstract idea of a superman and that he has died seems oddly sad to me, someone who doesnt really feel that affected when a great celebrity dies in general. Yes I consider them losses but more so that I think any death is a loss on they are people I can recognize and therefore somehow feel more connected to. Its more I guess that I took his death to signify the death of that abstract construction of "superman".
