[The voice of Mulder comes on, complete with the sound of him chewing gum.]

If you knew the meaning of existence, but had no way to decipher it, what would you do? Hypothetically. [This whole thing is DRIVING HIM CRAZY. Having the ultimate answer right there just out of reach does that to him.]You know... for all my experience with psychics, the ( Read more... )

close encounters with the horny beast, even the goats have conspiracies, his jaw is starting to hurt, plot, horoscope experiment, astrological madness!, it followed me home, it's probably still 42, experiment, a bad alignment?, maybe it's an x-file, the stupendous yappi never saw this

...do horses count as farm animals?

...and who on Earth is Scully?

[Here we go again...really, though, it's almost a relief to hear Mulder's voice. The man has a way of either helping experiments make sense or just making them look saner by comparison.]

Close enough. Have you ever known farm animals to stalk anyone before?

[This is a perfectly reasonable question, he swears.]

Oh, Scully's my partner from back home. The Malnosso just did her their idea of a favor and brought her here with the last cycle.

...on occasion, yes. Generally the smaller ones, though. Chickens, and the like.

[He's heard less reasonable questions by a very long shot. Carry on, Mulder.]

...I look forward to meeting her. She sounds like an interesting sort of person.

So in your experience goats don't tend to stalk people?

[Good, good, nothing too insane on the scale here then.]

You'd get along, I'll have to introduce you sometime. She's a lot more... skeptical, than I am - [Ok, so that's MOST PEOPLE.] - but I have a feeling this place will open her mind. Plus, it always helps to have a doctor in the house.

No. Attack and headbutt, yes, but actual stalking is a new one on me.

[Nope. You are still in the clear, Mulder.]

This place has a way of doing that to people. Opening their minds, I mean. You know the sort of world I come from, and even I've learned a few new things.

[The existence of aliens, for one.]

[Oh, good. Not that he expected Giles to think him too crazy.]

Maybe I did something to this goat in a past life and it's only now seeking revenge.

[Totally plausible he thinks.]

I only wish it didn't have to be like this. There are better ways I could have chosen to open her mind than experimentation and kidnapping.

If we had ghosts here, I'd suspect a haunting with that very same motivation. But as far as I know, we don't. Or if we do, they're exceptionally placid.

Have you had much to do with goats in the past, then.

It's funny you would mention ghosts...

...as for the goat, I have no idea. I've never wronged any farm animals in any way that I can think of.

Funny I would mention ghosts? Was there something about ghosts?

[Mulder, it never ends with you, does it?]

Oh, it's just that I've acquired this new power to see dead people from my world. Not that I mind too much, most of them are pretty good conversationalists. It's a hell of a surprise when they first appear, though.

Just...spontaneously acquired this power, then? Woke up with the ability to see dead people?

And they're just people from your world, then?

Yeah. I'm pretty sure it was the 'superpower' I gained when that spider bit me. So much for shooting out cobwebs or x-ray vision...

They're all people from my world, so far. People who were of importance to me somehow.

...I'm sorry.

[For the spider bite or the visions? Hard to say. Probably for both.]

It's all right. It's actually been rather fascinating, for most of them. Old contacts, people who once gave me important information...

[Though talking to his father again, that was awkward.]
