[Fox is still out and about investigating, putting all of his nifty equipment to good use as he's dealing with the recent appearance of the monsters. When he finally takes a break, it's to catch up with things in general as well as family.]This might sound like a weird idea, but has anyone managed to capture or otherwise contain one of those beasts ( Read more... )

I...recently managed to come into possession of a corpse, yes.

But I'm afraid it's not in the best condition.

Good condition or not, I'd be interested in what you've observed. And in having a good look at it, for the record.

[It's times like this he almost wishes some of his dreams would come true. There was this redheaded woman who was apparently really awesome at examining corpses.]

Can you stop by Building 7, then?

Building 7, got it. I'll be by in a few.

[Fox won't miss out on he chance to see one of these things up close. Close...r than he's managed so far with his own attempts.]

I'll be behind the building. Between it and the forest.

Follow your nose.

[When Mulder finally arrives, he'll find Giles sitting amidst a pile of wood and working at it with some tools. Laying a few yards away is the corpse of one of the beasts.

It's been pretty well fried. The stench is awful.]

[As soon as the stench assaults his nose, Fox knows he's come to the right area. He approaches, taking in the damage he sees done to the creature. And trying not to gag from that dreadful odor.]

Looks like I'm late to the barbecue. What happened?

[Giles puts down the hammer and looks down at Mulder.]

My brother doesn't like being followed. Especially not by creatures like that.

The other one was in worse shape.

Your brother sure is talented. But it looks like it was effective... more than effective.

[Crouches down to look over the charred beast.]

He is. And it was.

I also have...several hours of video footage, at this point, if that's any more help.

Good, I'd be curious to have a look at that and get an idea of what's going on with them. My attempts to get very close to them so far have been... pretty well unsuccessful.

[He pokes around at the corpse a little bit more, but he's realizing that looking at the live ones will probably give better clues.]

[With a slight thump, Giles' journal lands on the ground beside Mulder.]

So have mine. They don't like being recorded, but they've tolerated me at a distance.

Thanks. Yeah, I've found that they don't like being bothered in general... they definitely seem to be eager to get at something, though...

[After a bit more looking over the dead one, he picks up the journal and turns his attention to what he's recorded.]

You had that impression as well, then?

[Nothing terribly notable on the video. Mostly, it's recordings of the beasts sniffing around various buildings and pacing various paths. Things get interesting whenever they approach a villager, though, mostly because that's about the point where Giles throws a rock at it.]

I keep wondering if that had something to do with why they were following Helios so closely.

ufo_fanboy May 2 2011, 17:38:59 UTC
Hm... That could be. It seems like they attack mainly if provoked... Did they attack Helios at all? [He goes back and replays a couple of the more interesting bits, doing so a couple of times so he has a good feel for it.] Look at the way they move, they're so purposeful...

Yes, they are. You see how they, um, how they seem more interested in certain villagers than others? Even when those villagers don't make a move towards them at all?

He...didn't give it the chance to reach "provoked" once it had backed him up against a tree.

[He considers that a little while.] What's so special about the ones they chase after... what do they have that these beasts want?

[Ah, frustrating, but also a conundrum that Mulder wants to resolve somehow.]
