Chapter 9

He woke up the next morning still in his suit, feeling annoyed as the blinding sunlight poked him right at his
face, and he cracked an eye open, reluctance seeping throughout his body to stop him from waking up.

It’s a Sunday, dude. Relax. Chill. The negative side of him kept chanting and whispering for him to continue sleeping, but he slapped them away and sat up, yawning as he did.

He rubbed his eyes, stood up and stretched his stiff limbs, and took a shower. He rummaged his fridge and decided to have omelets for breakfast, even though it was well past noon he’d still like to call it a late breakfast, and ate after switching on the television, just for the sake of having some noise rippling in his quiet apartment.

Even Choco could sense that something was off about him that day and he just whimpered, lying down on the kitchen floor while feeding on his lonely state. He never plays with me anymore these days….

The young man moved over to the living room and started fiddling with his phone which he accidentally left on the coffee table, forgetting to bring it with him the previous night, while sinking sluggishly back into the couch; it seemed as if he didn’t have any plans for the day, or as if he didn’t have a purpose nor the spirit to live.

While he was idly staring into space with the sound of the television still vibrating through the room, his phone shrieked and he jumped, dropping the phone. He cursed and picked it up, flipping it open without reading the screen, “Hello?” he almost shouted.

“Whoa, someone’s grumpy.”

He sighed, “Koki…well, what’s wrong?”

“Okay, okay, no need to rush. Yucchi-” and the line was cut off.

He groaned loudly, irritated that the battery was out, “Darn modern contraptions.” He went to his room to charge it and realized that there were several messages left unread in his inbox.

Ueda Tatsuya, Ueda Tatsuya, Ueda Tatsuya… all of them were from his neighbour.

‘Hi. Are you at home?’

‘I’m in front of your door now, I hope you won’t mind the intrusion.’

‘I’m sorry if I’m being nosy, but where are you? Are you alright?’

He snapped his phone shut, clasping it in his palm, and crouched down beside his bed, leaning against it, with one arm slung over a drawn up knee while the other beside his outstretched leg, his phone firmly inside his hand.

He was disheartened at what had been told to him, knowing too well that he really, truly didn’t know anything about this creature called Ueda Tatsuya. He threw his head against the bed, closing his eyes and sighing a year’s worth of sigh. Just when he thought everything was going smoothly, it backfired, and it certainly threw him under the weather, making him relapse back to square one.

Yet he couldn’t deny that he felt comfortable being around him, every fleeting moment spent together was as precious as gold, and seeing his smile was all that mattered. And although it sounded childish, unrealistic, farcical, nonsensical; he would like to believe that it was because they were somehow meant for each other, like how Koki had once joked.

Now wasn’t the time to give up, not yet, not without a fight. If knowing who Tatsuya was what he was lacking then he’ll confront the other and state out clearly that he- that he, Nakamaru Yuichi, wanted to- to-…and his mind blacked out for a second, what was he going to tell the other? You couldn’t just demand a complete informative manual profile of another person without having them feel offended or take you for a creepy stalker.

Or, no, no way in hell, he thought. There was only one option left for him to choose: confess.

*~*~*~*
Kamenashi was browsing through a boutique when Nakamaru called him, his voice a little strained, confused.

The older man was a nice person, he knew, and it was obvious in his eyes that he was in love with one of Kamenashi’s best friends, and he supported that. He could sense it from the pianist too, it wasn’t very clear, but it was there, and Kamenashi hoped that the spark will burn and turn into an inferno that’ll break the chains of Tatsuya’s past; he didn’t know much of it, he had relinquished on finding out long ago, but he knew that his friend’s past had something to do with why he had no voice.

Akanishi and Nishikido seem to know, but he didn’t want to intrude on anybody’s personal background story unless that person himself wanted to share it with him, and maybe it wasn’t time for him to know the truth just yet. But with the appearance of Nakamaru, he felt that it was inevitable that there was bound to be some big and significant changes occurring in Tatsuya’s life, and probably the people around him too.

But the older guy was somewhat slow; he even had Kame articulate what love was, and he obligingly explained it to the other, even though it was in the wee hours of a weekend morning, and he guessed that Nakamaru still thought that his feelings was surreptitious, and Kamenashi himself played along and pretended to still be oblivious to whom Nakamaru’s crush was.

He pressed the answer button, “Hello.”

“Hi, Kame, urm…I’m sorry for disturbing you.”

“Not at all,” he replied succinctly while trailing his hand on a few belts.

There was a pause and the person on the other line released a shaky breath.

“Nakamaru, are you okay?”

“Uh…”

“Stop belching, tell me what’s the matter?” he said laughingly.

He ambled back and forth in front of the TV, sitting down restlessly on the couch and getting back up again, picking up the remote control and paced up and down from the balcony to all sections and rooms of his apartment. He sighed countless of times and stood near the half opened door that led to the balcony, finally finding the right words, “Um, have you had lunch?” or not.

Kamenashi laughed heartily at the other line, “Nakamaru, I don’t think you’re calling me just to ask about whether I’ve had a meal or not. And for the record I haven’t.”

“Sorry, sorry. My mind’s a little blank right now.”

“I’d say a lot of emptiness is happening with your head.”

He tried a laugh and it failed miserably.

“Now now, calm down and take a deep breath. Relax, and tell me what’s going on,” But Kamenashi had already guessed an answer to that question.

Yuichi inhaled deeply, and then his chest heaved down, releasing a slow breath.

“If- if you like- no, I mean, l-l-lo-lo-lo-love someone,” Kame stifled a giggle when he heard Yuichi emphasizing the word ‘love’ in a hasty tone, “What would you do? What would you do to- um, to- you know- to-”

“To move on to next stage?” Kame finished the sentence.

“Yeah that.”

Kamenashi had guessed right, and a grin lit his face. “Have you seriously considered your feelings?”

“What? I haven’t- wait, why are you assuming that I’m the one that’s in need of your love advice?”

The younger rolled his eyes, “Okay then, I’m assuming that your sister has some issues concerning her love life and as a caring older brother, you’re seeking advice from a friend, is that okay?”

“Yeah, you can continue.”

“Right. So, have she really calculated her feelings? Are her feelings real?”

“I think so…If not, what’re the explanations to what I- she’s always feeling when she spends time together with the boy?” He frowned, anxiety starting to claw around his heart.

“Hmm…” Kame sounded contemplative. “Are they real enough?”

Yuichi stopped to think it through, he was sure enough that they were real, he had never ever felt that way towards any other being in his life before, he still didn’t know much about the other, but wasn’t that a hurdle that needed to be overcome in most relationships?
Just seeing Tatsuya’s smile and feeling his presence, that were enough to make him feel belonged, so what more would he ever want to initiate a relationship? Maybe he was being irrational and a little too hasty, but he didn’t want to let this chance slip away, he felt sure that he was the one, and the feelings that he held was true.

“Of course they are.”

Kamenashi was quite shocked hearing the voice that was laced with confidence, he imagined Nakamaru standing stiffly in his tall posture, a determined look dawning his face, feeling sure of what he had said. Kame just smiled.

“Then what’re you- what’s she waiting for? Confess already!”

Yuichi widened his eyes, what he feared for was now said out loud, and he threw his arms out frantically, the remote control flying out of his hand, “Wait Kame, I dropped something,” he rushed to look down in search of his remote control from the balcony, and was mystified when there was no trace of the device.

“Okay, just confess and you’ll be fine!” Kame chirped gaily and he clicked his phone shut.

Yuichi just sat gloomily on the floor, running a hand through his hair, vacillated, when the door rang.

He remembered the messages where Tatsuya sounded so worried about him and his heart fluttered, hoping his prediction would be true.

He almost jumped to the door and quickly turned the handle and a figure as tall as him loomed over him, his wavy chestnut brown hair tied back in a ponytail, his eyes hiding under the shadows of the brim of his cap, the sleeves of his blue hoodie rolled up to his elbows, and he wore sandals with shorts to compliment his summer attire. And there was a guitar slung around the young man’s shoulder.

“Akanishi?”

Akanishi looked up and threw an angry glare, “This yours?” He extended an arm and in his hand was Yuichi’s remote control. “And who writes their name and address on a remote control anyways?”

The older man blushed in embarrassment, quickly snatching the remote and burying it in his pockets. “That’s none of your business! And how did this end up with you anyway?”

“You were the one who threw it on my head, big-nose!”

“Who you calling big-nose?!”

They hollered at each other in front of Yuichi’s apartment and soon the disturbed neighbours came out.

“Look what you’ve done now, you’ve gathered a crowd!”

“Me? You were the one that came to my house unprecedented and uninvited!”

“Who would wanna come to your house anyways?!”

Akanishi’s shoulder was tapped lightly and he whipped around, annoyed, “What is it?!”

A startled expression sketched his face, “Tat-chan.”

*~*~*~*

“So you’ve come here because you wanted to visit this guy?”

Tatsuya nodded distractingly while patting and brushing Choco’s head. Yuichi who just set a tray of lemonade in a pitcher and three glasses felt a glee of joy, but then he pouted a little, it seemed that Tatsuya was even more fascinated in his dog.

“Nee, let’s go back to your place. I thought we were going to strum some strings today?” Akanishi said to Tatsuya.

The older suddenly jerked his head up and turned to look at Yuichi sharply, with his unreadable round eyes almost penetrating through the latter. Yuichi gulped back, and stared with an uncertain look.

Tatsuya crept from his position near Choco to where Yuichi was instead and continued to gaze intently at him until their faces were a few inches apart. Yuichi felt his heart thump wildly against his ribcage, sending vibrations throughout his body, and he was starting to produce droplets of sweat.

He immediately stood up and bowed 90 degrees, shouting “I’m sorry I didn’t reply to any of your messages last night!” clamping his eyes shut, he continued, “I didn’t mean to make you worry, it’s just that I forgot to bring my phone with me.”

Akanishi who was taking a sip from his glass paused, curiosity tugging at the hems of his mind.

Tatsuya straightened up and stood. He patted Yuichi’s head as a gesture of forgiveness, and the older slowly looked up. Tatsuya was smiling genuinely, and pulled Yuichi to where Choco was, asking him to play with the excited pet, while Akanishi who was sitting leisurely on the couch witnessed the scene with an eye peeking from under the brim of his cap.

*~*~*~*

They were at Tatsuya’s house, all four of them including Choco, with the pianist slumped back against the couch on the floor, Akanishi taking place beside him and Yuichi dubiously sitting on a chair with his dog on his lap.
He was hesitant to tag along, because now that he had realized his feelings, he was even more conscious of Tatsuya, and always jumped impulsively when the younger sent a glance or worse, his radiant and cute smile.

Both of the men cradling guitars in their hands wrote songs together, and every now and then they either go to Akanishi’s guitar shop or Ueda’s apartment to play a few tunes. It was beautiful, just how much Tatsuya’s friends adore him, and each had their own unique way of showing. Even Koki was now jabbering about how childish yet interesting his ‘Pomu’ was; what qualities they shared he didn’t really know.

After a short while, Tatsuya received a message and he rushed out, noting that he had forgotten a few things relating to work and that he’ll be back in an hour or so.

Akanishi and Yuichi just nodded assent, and while Akanishi’s fingers continued to pluck the strings of his guitar, filling the silent space with the rendition of his calm strumming, Yuichi relaxed in his spot, listening and fiddling with Choco’s ears.

He abruptly stopped, and his raspy voice replaced the melody. “Tat-chan seems to care a lot about you.”

Yuichi’s hand froze, stiff but then loosened again. “I- I never knew.”

“Yeah well, he doesn’t say much does he?” and Akanishi laughed at his own remark. When Yuichi didn’t respond, he got angry and threw a pillow towards the older, “Laugh will you?”

“Hah. Ha,” was all he got.

When Akanishi finished muttering unpleasantly to himself, showing his dissatisfaction, he coughed a little to clear his voice. “So I see you’re also very interested in him?”

If Yuichi was drinking at that moment he would’ve probably spit out a fountain of liquid and tried his best stuttering nonsense to deny the fact, but he wasn’t, so instead, he just looked startled and tried to find a solid defense.

“Yeah don’t even bother to deny that, I may be Bakanishi but when trouble calls, the smart side of me will surely arise to save the day.”

Yuichi bit his lips and looked contemplative. “I won’t. Because I myself don’t really know what to say.”

Akanishi wanted to pour scorn and tease the other even more, but he was more interested in a few other things. “You seem a bit lost though, Tat-chan must be your first crush,” he said monotonously and Yuichi threw an insulted look. The look melted though, and a frown made its way on the older’s face, his heavy eyebrows drawing on the bridge of his nose, wrinkling his forehead and darkening his eyes.

Akanishi set his guitar aside. “Would you want me to be your map?”

“Yeah I would, only I’m sure you’d make me even more lost.”

“Ah don’t be like that. Any friend of Tat-chan is a friend of mine,” he pulled back his cap and winked.

“That’s not very convincing.”

Akanishi was quiet for a while, and then said, “You just met him a few months back right? You sure you’re not going to fast with this? Do you even really know who he is?”

“I-”, Yuichi really didn’t know what to say but his mouth was left hanging open before Akanishi spoke again.

“Aha!” he exclaimed. “That’s your problem isn’t it? You’d like to know more about him to affirm your feelings,” a loathing sneer twisted Akanishi’s gorgeous face as he prompted to get the cat out of Nakamaru’s bag.

Yuichi looked away from the other’s face to hide his annoyance. This brat’s smarter than I thought…

The older’s face was a mask of suppressed defiance as he fought back the urge to jump on Akanishi and strangle some secrets out of him, maybe it could work, but then, he was bigger, so what’re the chances of Yuichi winning?

“I could help you if you want to.”

Akanishi’s voice sounded heavy as it flowed through the quiet room, but it was a burden-lifter for Yuichi as he processed the words. He slowly turned his head, wide-eyed, “Do you really mean it?” And he narrowed his eyes, suspicion arising in his voice.

The other simply shrugged, “What would you like to know?”

*~*~*~*

He was 7. But at such an early age, no, ever since he was brought into this world, his fate had been decided and sealed. He didn’t know any better, and he thought that if his mama asked him to do it, he’d be able to make her happy. And if he was lucky enough, papa would even give him a praise.

But as he grew, he noticed an empty feeling forming inside him, refusing to thaw or wither. Classes became boring, recitals became bothersome, and coming face to face with his parents was even more of a burden. He was already cynical at such a young age, and his mind often wandered off to places which were untouchable by others.

An estranged child was what the adults started to call him. His tutor gave up on him, his grades were already dropping anyways, he skipped other classes, and his fingers danced on the keys of the piano, but his soul and mind flew somewhere else.

He was a disgrace. And so he ought to be taught a lesson. Solitary confinement, ultimate excommunication and expulsion, trapped and chained inside a small room, lighted by a small railed window. He was only 10.

It went on for days, weeks, months; not talking to anybody, not having any stimulants to develop his growing self. But there was always the shouting and bickering, ‘have you learnt your lesson’, ‘do you want to skip classes anymore now’, ‘who do you think you are’, ‘you don’t have a place in this house if you don’t improve your behaviour’.

From a human, to a puppet, to a soulless and lifeless vessel. Who was Ueda Tatsuya? Even he didn’t know the answer to that question. Whether it was the time when he was lying on the hospital bed, or when he was brought home to be recovered, he was still empty and a vacant expression was what he always wore.

It was confirmed that he would not be able to speak, not even a word or a sound would be produced from his mouth. His brain refused to cooperate, and he became inaudible, almost invisible. He had lost his voice, and that was the price for his freedom.

He lost something that day, but he gained and recouped what was meant to be his; his ticket to be able to want something, to do things which he’ll decide to do, and to be unbind by the suffocating shackles.

He was finally free.

*~*~*~*

His eyes were pools of salty liquid and he gritted his teeth out of frustration, trying very hard to hold back the tears from falling freely out of his eyes. His lips quivered and a few streaks of tear tainted his face. He quickly covered his face with one arm, and tried to wipe away the tears using the sleeves of his shirt, rigorously scrubbing his face.

“Sentimental much?”

Yuichi glared at Akanishi with wide, red blood shot eyes, and after a sniff, he trained his eyes downcast.

“And-and you and Nishikido are the only ones who know this?”

“Yeah. Wait, how did you know that Nishikido knows?”

Yuichi just shook, trying to drop the matter, it was a poignant sort of moment and he wasn’t really feeling the need to converse.

If this guy is crying, I’m sure Kame would be wailing and trying to bundle Tat-chan into his arms if I ever told him this.
Akanishi just sat leisurely in his seat and stared hard at Yuichi who was searching for comfort from his dog.

Had he made the right choice to blurt out the truth to Nakamaru Yuichi? He didn’t really trust him, yet he was pretty sure that the guy was reliable. And he knew very darn well if a person was in love, so he guessed that there wouldn’t be any problem as long as Nakamaru was sworn to secrecy if Tat-chan were to ask where he got the piece of information from. He didn’t really want to be a victim and end up receiving a black eye as a result.

*~*~*~*

It was a busy day for him. He had a pile of work to finish, but Koki was always bothering him with a video that he’s been dying to show to Yuichi ever since the night of Tatsuya’s recital. It was an online video showed on a streaming site of Tatsuya’s performance, and it surely did distract him from working.

It amazed him. How a person who had suffered so much could still be living to that very day, smiling and receiving, accepting life as it was.

Surely there was some dark tentacles entwining its laces around Tatsuya’s heart, constantly reminding him of his past, but he seemed to be able to overcome it, and that made Yuichi feel even more in love.

He was star-struck, and dazzled by the other’s strength, and how bright his smile was, like he was supposed to be the luckiest being on earth despite his sufferings.

“Na-ka-ma-ru~!” a gloriously melodious voice called out his name and he whipped his head around to face his boss.

“Tegoshi-san,” he stood up. “Is there anything that you need from me?”

Tegoshi just shook while smiling happily, his eyes shrinking as his cheeks were pulled up by a big grin, his hair that framed his petite face dancing around. “What were you thinking about? You seem so distracted and flighty.”

“Ah, nothing really. I’m just thinking about some things. I’ll get back to work right away.” Yuichi proceeded to sit down again and start doing his assigned tasks.

“I see. And urm, have you seen Kei-chan? He’s been eating lunch at such a faraway place lately, and because of that he always comes back late.” Tegoshi received a shrug from Yuichi and he just shrugged back, “Maa, it’s okay, I’ll just have to punish him when he comes back!”

*~*~*~*

So it wasn’t such a bad day after all. He managed to finish and send in all the files before working hours were over, and now he was joyfully walking back home as the sky was starting to hint its shades of yellowish orange.

But he slowed his pace, and a light frown sketched his face. That was the problem. There was no trouble or problem arising that day, and it bothered him. Things had gone way too smoothly for his liking, and it was ominous. He was starting to feel disturbed, so he just regained his fast pace and sprinted to his apartment building.

“Ah, I almost forgot, food’s running out,” he muttered to himself as he ticked off his mental check list.

Yes, it was a very good day, and it was freaking him out. He got half the price on red meat, a free carton of milk when he bought some strawberry flavoured yoghurt which were also on sale, and the promoter-girl at the front door gave him a free sample of a new prototype candy. What was happening to his life? He was suddenly very lucky, and it flummoxed him.

It was already quite late but because it was amidst of summer, the sun was still lingering in the horizon.

As he stood in front of the supermarket, keeping some spare change into his wallet, a figure brushed past in front of him and as the rush of air ruffled his fringe, his wallet was also taken away at the spur of the moment. Okay, so it wasn’t such a fair day after all.

“Oi, thief!” he hollered and started to accelerate the speed of his legs, running after the thief. Must this happen all the time when you're living in Tokyo?!

The big figure turned into a sharp corner, and Yuichi had a sinking feeling that his money was going to be mugged just as easily as it was once almost stolen. He slowed himself and shut his eyes, maybe if he hoped hard enough, somebody might just help him retrieve his money back.

A loud curse was heard, followed by a few crashes, and he traced the steps leading to the alley where the thief was headed. He found an unconscious man lying down in heaps of garbage bags, and hovering over him was an elderly man.

When Yuichi looked closer, he realized that the man wasn’t as old as his face suggested, it just seemed like he was carrying a ton of burden on his shoulders, and that added to the lines on his forehead and under his dim eyes.

He leaned over the fallen figure and picked up a brown wallet that was on the ground, flipped it open and his brows crumpled together, “I’m assuming this is yours?”

Yuichi just nodded numbly as the stranger placed the wallet in his palms. “Take good care of the things you care about before it’s too late, boy,” he patted Yuichi’s shoulder and before he could walk away, the young man called out, “Wait, sir! Um, you’re such a kind person, yet it looks like you’ve lived a life of regrets and worries. I hope things’ll get better for you.”

The man in his casual suit paused for a while, and without turning back, he waved a hand in farewell.

*~*~*~*

He looked so extremely familiar, and the vibe he emitted was also recognizable.Even the circumstances in which they met was not alien.

But Yuichi was sure he never came face to face with the old stranger, so he just chose to forget about the coincidental meeting, but he was still very grateful.

A cold feeling damped over him when he opened his unlocked door. Someone had broke in.

The wind hit his face as he widened the door, and as the curtains that draped over the door that led to the balcony moved like weeds underwater greeted him, he froze, imbibed by the celestial glow coming from the view of the sunset, with a figure he knew well leaning over the holding.

He gulped, and dropped his groceries along with his other things as he plodded closer to Tatsuya.

“Just confess and you’ll be fine!” Kamenashi’s words rang sonorously in his mind. He knew that what had been said was true, he had experienced some painful things in the past where he lost things which he had a chance to fight for in the first place, and the remorse for the things he did not do was inconsolable. Like what he had said to Nishikido that night, he didn’t want to live a life of regret where he had let his chances slipped through his lithe fingers.

His confidence wasn’t much, but he was ready. Being with Ueda Tatsuya made him happy, and he wanted to keep it that way.

“Hey,” he greeted in a simple manner.

The smaller man was startled out of his wits and jumped, it seemed like he was deep in thought.

He calmed down, and smiled ruefully. “Sorry for intruding.”

“How did you get in anyway?”

Tatsuya held up a silver key placed between two fingers and grinned cheekily.

“Right, I guess putting a spare key under the rug wasn’t such a brand idea,” Yuichi sighed heavily, and then laughed as the mood uplifted.

Calm yourself, Yuichi. Don’t let your heart fool you.

His laughter died out, and Tatsuya looked misplaced again, the mood relapsing. Yuichi was instantly worried, completely forgetting his own problems. “What’s wrong? Are you alright?” What Akanishi had told him chimed in his head, he imagined dark surroundings, a young Tatsuya sitting alone in a room, looking frail and empty. He was afraid for the other’s sake.

The red-head just shook, and turned his face away, riveting his eyes to the sunset.

Yuichi did the same, and continued in an even voice, “You know that you could always lean on me.”

Like all of their moments spent together, only silence was heard, and the atmosphere was heavy with inexplicable and unsaid words.

Tatsuya nudged Yuichi’s elbow with a finger, wanting his attention.

He released a deep breath. “I’m confused. My mind is in a mess.”

Yuichi gave an encouraging look.

“I feel that-” he halted, expressing hesitance. Yuichi placed a hand on his pale one, and gave a tight squeeze. “I feel that I need to be with you. So that I can calm down. I may have not known you for a long time but, you do that to me; being able to soothe my feelings.”

The words signed were really simple, yet the impact was significant. What had this enigma done to a Nakamaru Yuichi, it was really a mystery.

Yuichi was erubescent, buying Koyama all those lunches was worth his money. He was at a loss for words, and he gawped, clearly feeling the blush creeping up his neck and face.

“Just confess…”

“I like you.”
