Games My Father Played
Tell the day in ten words. Then, she would take five, DJaq would take five. His always the more poetic.
Dread. She alone knew where their cage was bound.
Fear. Slavery, an ugly word in any language.
Hunger. For food, for kindness, for any shred of hope.
Resignation. So far from home, their fate insurmountable.
Curiosity. A forest ambush.
Suspicion. Only a Crusader (proven enemy of any Saracen) would know their tongue so well.
Surprise. This man kept his word.
Betrayal. The men ran when she helped the big man.
Alliance. Opportunity to belong.
Uncertainty. Could such an accord work?
