A brief tutorial on clapping

Nov 20, 2005 09:32

There are many times when one may decide to clap. Usually, clapping occurs when one wants to show appreciation for a person or group of people, say at a play, a concert, a speech, or even a sporting event. This is the most common type of clapping. The thunderous applause of hundreds of people is enough to boost the confidence of even the most reputable performers and the most agile athletes. Clapping does not always have to be in front of a person. The best example of clapping not meant for an individual would be “the clapper ™”. No doubt most of you have experienced the ease of turning off a light or turning on a tv with a simple hand motion. genius.
Now let us talk about inappropriate times to clap. Say someone dear to you has a heart attack, or just got hit by a car, clapping would undoubtedly be taboo. Clapping in a library would also cause more harm than good, as it would not only break the rules but disturb other hardworking individuals. Perhaps the most inappropriate, unfounded, and despicable form of unacceptable clapping can be found on an all too common place, a movie theatre at midnight during the debut of a popular film. Everyone in the theatre is aware of what is about to happen. Surely nobody expected Dolly Parton to appear onscreen playing the part of Harry Potter. In fact, based on the numerous Harry Potter costumes, the majority of the movie-goers that night were well aware of Harry’s appearance. One might argue that the clapping was to show appreciation when their magical hero walked on screen for the first time, but rest assured, he did NOT in fact hear you, and you accomplished nothing aside from drowning out the next few lines of dialogue with your audible idiocy. I hope you are all now very well educated on the appropriate and inappropriate times to clap. May we spread this knowledge with hopes of together being a more effective clapping society. Should I ever come across anyone clapping in a movie theatre again, I will beat them with the nearest blunt object and rewrite this informative essay in their blood. Also note that any pleased bystanders who may choose to clap after seeing such an incident would be completely justified in doing so. Have a good night.
