"BEYOND GDP. A LONG-TERM VIEW ON HUMAN WELLBEING AND INEQUALITY"

Research setting:
The Summer School is organized by the Groningen Growth and Development Centre under the scientific endorsement of the European Historical Economics Society and co-funded by the EHES, the University of Groningen and the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO).
Requirements:
The school invites applications from PhD candidates and post-doctoral researchers in Economic History and/or Economics with an interest in historical dynamics.
The deadline for applications is April 1, 2015.

Short course description:
How much better is life today than in the past? And do we always need income growth to improve welfare? This Summer School is devoted to exploring a research avenue that uses broad indicators of human welfare and the standard of living to measure welfare levels and growth of economic well-being worldwide. Topics include economic liberty and freedom, human development, inequality, measurement issues, and specific time periods and areas like the Roman Empire, Latin America and Africa (see also the attached brochure).
Lecturers:
Jan Luiten van Zanden (U Utrecht and Groningen), Leandro Prados de la Escosura (U Carlos III, Madrid), Marcel Timmer, (U Groningen), Leticia Arroyo Abad (U Middlebury), Ewout Frankema (U Wageningen), Wim Jongman (U Groningen).

Programme:
The format of the School is based on two lectures by invited speakers in the morning and student sessions in the afternoon, in which PhD candidates and post-doctoral researchers will present and discuss their research papers with senior scholars. This year's Summer School will also have an afternoon research training module in which participants will be offered the opportunity to practice quantitative techniques.
