Last night I went down to San Diego again to visit the boy.  This is the end of week 2 out of 3 of his pharmacology training class, which is totally the suck, but he's meeting a lot of great people and setting up some great connections (he got a private tour of the Johnson & Johnson pharm research center!).  We went out to dinner at a little ( Read more... )

Ohhhh man. The Stereophonics are my hands-down, absolute favorite band of all time. Kelly Jones (singer, songwriter) is the handsomeness in my LJ icon.

Ok, first off: their first album (Word Gets Around) really does define them. It's the best songwriting Kelly's ever done (lyric-wise) and there's so much on there that's autobiographical. My favorite Stereophonics song is on that album - "A Thousand Trees." "Traffic" and "Local Boy in the Photograph" are the other major standouts. The thing about Stereophonics songs is that in addition to being great musically, the lyrics to some just absolutely blow your mind, and these three songs are probably the best examples.

You Gotta Go There to Come Back is their fourth album, and it's a bit more mellow than the first two. There are some amazing ballads on there, my favorites being "Maybe Tomorrow," "Nothing Precious At All," and "Since I Told You It's Over." The latter is one of the most heartbreaking songs ever.

Their third album, Just Enough Education to Perform, has some really super chill songs. I think Kelly was on the happy pills when he wrote this one, I'm not sure. "Mr. Writer" is a great track and takes aim at music journalists. "Step On My Old Size Nines" is a love song that I am certain I want played at my wedding - it's about a little old couple at a wedding, and the woman tells her husband she's too tired to dance, and he says, "step on my old size nines and I'll take you 'round." It's stunning.

Performance and Cocktails is their second albums - it is much darker than any of the others. My favorites off of there are "The Bartender and the Thief" (super catchy), "Hurry Up and Wait," "Pick a Part That's New," and "A Minute Longer."

Off of Language Sex Violence Other, another one of the more gritty albums, my favorites are "Dakota" (the major single), "Rewind," and "Pedalpusher." "Devil" is pretty hot too.

Pull The Pin (newest album) has several songs that really rank up there - "It Means Nothing is the absolute best song on there in my opinion. Also, it's a beautiful love song.

Sorry for the novel - my fan-ness of the band knows no bounds. But my shortened version is that their first and fourth albums are my favorites.
