Another one of the various activities that we did during our quarantine period was to take a trip to the Olympic Park where the 2008 Summer Olympic games took place. This was a particularly exciting trip for me since watching the Olympics is a big deal in my family. It's funny that we all get so excited over the Olympics since none of us are really that into sports (except for my Dad), but I think what we enjoy most about it is the overall sense of people of every nation and race coming together in one place to celebrate something that we are all familiar with. I remember enjoying that sense of oneness with the rest of the world while I sat in front of my TV watching all the Olympic events last summer. That feeling came rushing back to me when I was able to see all the architectural beauties that I saw on TV last summer right in front of me. It was nice to relive the memory in such a way.
We were able to buy tickets to walk around in both the Water Cube and the Bird's Nest. In the Water Cube, flags of countries from all over the world were hanging near the ceiling, once again giving me that feeling of oneness with the world. As we sat in the seats of the Water Cube, I couldn't help but imagine Michael Phelps swimming in the water below. :) While standing in the center of the Bird's Nest stadium, I also imagined all the athletes who had worked so hard to stand at the same place last summer. Even though I was only a tourist, the atmosphere of the stadium seemed to emanate of the sense of accomplishment that those athletes must have felt to be in that stadium. It was a very inspiring moment for me.
