Kaoru was born three minutes after his brother Hikaru, and, with their parents often away on business, the two have always lived their lives side-by-side, never spending an extended amount of time apart. As such, the two are deeply secure in their relationship with one another and, due to their deliberate distancing of themselves from others, have been each other's main influence throughout their childhood; essentially shaping one another. Because of their parents' absenteeism in the greater part of their upbringing, Hikaru and Kaoru were raised by a succession of family members, maids and nannies, who could very rarely tell the two brothers apart - and the one maid they grew to like betrayed their trust in order to steal the combination for the family's safe and make off with its contents. Although she taught them valuable lessons before she left - including the art of fake tears - the main lesson they learnt from her was never to trust anyone else. As such, they pulled to one another instead.

This made them incredibly callous people until their final year of middle school. Until this point, they refused to allow anyone close to them, and often played cruel tricks in order to prove others' intentions as malicious. After being approached by an older student - Tamaki - to establish a club, their world gradually began to widen, and gradually they began to accept others as their friends - although in some cases, Kaoru seems to be the more socially able of the brothers, to the extent that he manipulates situations in order to give Hikaru various life lessons.

There’s not much to say about Kaoru. He’s just an average boy, with an average family and average friends, living an average life. Well. Apart from a few teeny tiny exceptions, like coming from a filthy-rich family and being part of a male harem in his spare time. But most of that is pretty par-for-the-course for Kaoru, to the extent that it's more the daily lives of commoners that confuses him more than anything else.
