She wears many masks. Her most common ones are the dutiful mother comforting and guiding Rogue through the pitfalls of their mutant lives; the fierce protectress of her species every time she faces off against the filthy, prejudiced humans and their foolish X-Men; and the fearless warrioress every time she charges into battle. She hides her true feelings behind these masks that sometimes still threaten to crumple. Never has it been harder to keep these masks in place than when she's had to face her blood child, Kurt, or her other child, Rogue, or her beloved Irene are in danger, all of which happened in one fell swoop today.
She's an expert at hiding behind these masks, but sometimes, even an expert falls. Sometimes, her masks slip, revealing her true feelings. She prefers to be alone during these times, often threatening to shoot anybody who comes near, but there's one who won't stay away no matter what threats she makes, all of which Irene knows are idle for, though she might harm anybody else, and will even eventually hurt their daughter, Destiny knows she'll never hurt her.
She goes to her during these times, slips pass Raven's guard, and holds her. She tells her it will be okay. She reassures her whatever's happened isn't her fault. She comforts her in every way she knows how, always carefully picking her words for she won't lie to her. She believes in what she tells her, and always, always she believes in Raven.
