I'm going insane trying to perform even the most basic video editing on Linux. Windows Movie Maker on XP was more functional and intuitive than anything I've found on Linux ( Read more... )

I do all my video editing on PiTiVi and I love it.

Upon attempting to play a video:

/usr/lib/pitivi/python/pitivi/application.py:284: Warning: g_object_set_qdata: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed
self.mainloop.run()
The program 'pitivi' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)'.

Sounds to me like your installation is borked.

Seems likely. Every video player leaks large amounts of memory, too.

This all started when a routine update installed a new version of fglrx in which ATI had dropped support for my two-year-old video card. After that update, any time an app went into full-screen mode (including YouTube videos) the display would turn to garbage... and remain that way even if I managed to close the app. I switched to the open source driver, then back to fglrx because the open source driver had its own issues. I may have screwed things up even worse in the process. Looks like it might be time to reinstall.

I used to use Avidemux as well. I don't do much video editing anymore however. I can't remember if I was on 64bit at that point.

I have had the best luck with Openshot on AMD_64.

It's got better controls, you can re-size the window to fit your screen (which you can't do with Pitivi if you are running 1024x768), it's easy to use and you can zoom in to single frames (you can do that with Pitivi, but you can't move the scroll bar along the bottom with any accuracy).

Other people have had success with Blender (The 3D rendering program), but I find that to be way too complicated for Video editing...

I should note, the videos I edit are not 1080p HD. They are usually 720p or lower which is probably why I haven't had issues with choppiness...

I find OpenShot to be quite acceptable for my needs.

My wife has had success with Pitivi but couldn't get it to output in anything but ogv (plugins for output probably weren't set up for her.)

I have friends that swear up and down about Kdenlive. That's not on your list, so try that one.
