Liz casts a quick glance at the door, making sure it’s completely closed. (She’d get up to lock it, but it’s all the way over there.) Feeling a little more secure, she decides to take the moment of uninterrupted privacy to confess what has been weighing on her mind all day.

“I just want you to know,” she begins, keeping her eyes low, “how much I appreciate you. I can always count on you to make me feel better when I feel lousy, which is pretty much all the time these days. It takes a lot to be there for someone who’s just, you know, aaaahcrazy sometimes, and you always manage to do that. And…you never make me feel ugly or fat or nerdy or lame. It’s like it’s okay for me to be myself around you, which is more than I can say about the idiots I surround myself with every day. So what I’m trying to say is….I love you.”

As soon as the words leave her mouth, she feels lighter. She feels relieved. She takes a deep breath and smiles, lifting her eyes from the stack of papers that she’s been staring at. She looks once more around her empty office and at the closed door before she picks up the strawberry cupcake.

“I’m so glad I could get that off my chest before I ate you,” Liz says.

She takes a bit and closes her eyes at the first taste of sugary frosting and moist cake on her tongue. “You’re the best ever,” she adds before swallowing.

The sixty-eight seconds that it takes to eat the cupcake are the happiest of Liz’s entire day. For that brief minute of food euphoria, she can forget about how lonely she is and how everything she wants is always out of reach. For just a minute, it fills the void.
